I also just got a composter from here: https://www.grassrootsstore.com/
Really awesome store!
You're going to LOVE it! I can't imagine life without mine. Enjoy!
Talk about good timing. My blender has been broken for about a month so I'm considering splurging on a Vita-Mix and a pair of LED minis when I get my income tax return in a few weeks.
Yeah, it's good thing I ordered one, my other blender started leaking today while making almond milk today.
That is awesome, SaFire!! I'm a bit envious as I've also been wanting one for a few years now. Enjoy it!!
I just bought a Vita-mix!! I've been wanting one for about 6 years!
Thanks, Halo and Dawn! Very interesting. I sure admire your focus and committment.
I'm so happy to see there are other raw foodists here!
My routine is very much like yours, Dawn. I'm usually never hungry first thing in the morning so I typically just drink a lot of water mixed with the juice of a lemon or lime instead of having breakfast. Once I get hungry around noon, I have a green juice which is also quite similar to Dawn's: Cucumber, celery, kale, spinach, (possibly some other greens), apple, and ginger. For an afternoon snack, I usually have a piece of fruit or two. It may be a grapefruit, an apple, a banana, whatever appeals to my body at the time. Dinner is always a salad of all different types of greens - spinach, kale, lettuce, dandelion greens, collard greens, mustard greens, etc. with some chopped up veggies and an avocado mashed up with lime juice for the dressing. I also eat a lot of young Thai coconuts (the water is delicious and full of electorlytes) and when they're in season, durian and watermelon are my favorite foods (not together, of course).
Before I went raw, I had been vegan for about 8 or 9 years. I've always been the type of person to dive in head first, so I didn't transition at all, I just went raw overnight.
My boyfriend eats a mostly vegan diet and right now he is trying to slowly transition to eating raw. My daughter is 4 and I try my best to get her to as many raw foods as possible, but she does eat mostly vegan. As for everybody else in my life, they are very supportive and accepting of my lifestyle. Many people tell me how admirable my eating habits are, but that they feel they lack the will power to eat this way. I tell them they can do anything they put their mind to! As for eating out, I rarely ever do so, but if the situation arrises, I usually make sure to eat before I go out or I bring some fruit or an avocado or two.
I follow a mostly raw diet also. I eat all raw at home and then make exceptions when I eat out. I find that incorporating green juices or green smoothies is necessary for me.
I can share my typical routine which is very simple: I have a green juice made with a cucumber, celery, bunch of kale/chard/collards, pear or apple, lemon, and ginger in the morning. I take chopped up strawberries, banana, dates, and pecans for a mid-morning snack. Usually arugula, tomato, avocado salad with lemon juice for lunch, then some sort of raw cheese made with nuts, pesto, and tomato for dinner. Sometimes I eat a late lunch and skip dinner. I always make sure to have some sort of dessert in the house like raw cashew-coconut-carob cupcakes or raw chocolate truffles. I supplement with cell food and B12.
I transitioned overnight. Fast food one day, raw the next. It was really hard and a shock to my system, but worked for me. Some recommend starting with raw desserts or trying to do raw only until dinner and having a cooked dinner.
Adapting to non-raw foodists isn't as difficult for me as adapting to non-vegans. I will eat vegan food that isn't raw when I go out or to a friend's house. The most difficult is probably family events (my family is cattle ranchers on one side, meat and potato people on the other). Some people will see your results and want to change their own diet, others will feel threatened by it - I just take it in stride and try not to get overly frustrated or upset. Just lead by example!
I hope that helps, Glenna - even though you didn't ask me I thought I might be able to chime in ;)
So, Halo and Amelia, can you please share the basics of eating raw? How did you transition? How do you adapt to others in your life who don't eat raw?
