Hi guys,

So as a part of my exercise program, my personal trainer analysed my food diary for a few days. She found that since I've become a vegetarian (6 months now) I'm really just eating carbs for dinner and very little protein. While I'm fine with my calorie count overall, I do want to get more protein at night as it keeps me full up and stops me from snacking later in the evening.

At the moment the only high protein thing I make for dinner is fritatta and occasionally stir fry with Quorn (meat substitute) or tofu.

Can you guys suggest a favorite recipe that doesn't rely so much on bread, pasta, rice etc?

Thanks!

Jo

hi ya

What do you add to your pastas? Breads?

If you are adding lots of beans, nuts and greens chances are you might be getting enough protein

A quick search for you xx

thanks lady d.

I think I need to up the legumes aspect of my food intake - I do the occasional baked beans on toast, but other than that, not much.

I'm gonna go get me some chickpea/lentil/quinoa action :)
vegetables actually have a lot more protein than you may think! Read "Eat to Live" for advice on a healthy diet! =]
I've heard that not too many people are crazy about this book as I am, but have you read Skinny Bitch? Lots of great information and lots of great recipes!
I agree with Ashley about the Skinny Bitch books. The information in there is great!

But about protein... Your body has no way to store excess protein and uses calcium from your bone marrow as a binder to flush it from your body. Every Dialysis machine in America is in use because we have worked our kidneys so hard. This is how cow's milk in humans actually helps to CAUSE Osteoporosis.... the calcium content is too high for human consumption.
The protein studies for human nutrition were done on white rats. White rats gestate in 21 days, the babies are weaned at 21 days old, and rats become sexually mature at ten weeks of age. All this rapid growth takes a great deal of protein. We are not white rats, and they are poor models for human nutritional needs.
The only time a human would come close to needing this much protein would be during infancy, when bones and skin are growing at their most rapid. You might be surprised at how little protein we actually need.
Human breast milk is FOUR PERCENT protein. Even a baked potato is eleven percent protein.

You don't need to worry about it so much, so long as you are eating a variety of foods that are not processed.
Quinoa and beans and nuts!! Anything like legumes and stuff. I like to make a bunch of quinoa for the week and store it and put it on almost anything! In salads, on sandwhiches, etc... Also there are these awesome vegan bean/legume sausages or hot dogs (whetever) that aren't fake meat, they are made out of vegetables and legumes and grains and they are delicious! I think they are called Field Roast, and they have lots of protein! I also buy the most protein rich bread I can find...
