Okay, so Thursday was the first day of my 8-week hoopdance/workout class through our adult-ed program. There were 27 brand new hoopers there and it was wild! We had an entire gym at the middle school to play in. It was a challenge because I had to keep running back and forth across the gym to help people learn tricks. But I was able to cover waist and hip hooping, vertical and horizontal arm hooping, kicking over the hoop as it goes around the body, bringing the hoop back on the body,…

I've been hooping just over a year now, and yes, I progressed fairly fast - but that has a story. So. . .STORY TIME!
The first time I saw hooping was live, when SaFire came to my school. After reviewing my rhythmic gymnastics skills (with a rhythmic gymnastics hoop which is basically a really light, really thin, really small hoop) I tracked SaFire down and bought a REAL hoop off of her. I tried it out, and it was way easier than my gymnastics hoop, so my confidence was REALLY high. She took a video. . . I watched it. . . I was horrible! So, I started working really hard, practicing all the time and taking video all the time, so I could see what I was doing wrong and figure out how to fix it. Within four months, I was performing and within seven/eight I was performing professionally.
I think the only reason I progressed so fast was just because I had such strong DRIVE to get better. I still have that drive, just now that I've found my style in the hoop, it's a little more laid back ;) Practice is the key. At one point last January I was practising up to five hours a day. Right now, I'm lucky if I get four hours a week in between shows and exams at school, but I try my best to make it a priority.
I hope that actually answers your question!
