musings on what I learned at light and motion: motivational talk

Posted on July 21, 2009 at 9:41am 0 Comments

I was able to witness the amazing motivational talk by Carissa and Sandra at light and motion, and it's still affecting me today. What I learned most was the concept of sticking to a few things and focusing on those. I really identified with Sandra when she confided in us that she loves to do hooping, drawing, web design, poi, staff, and on and on and on. I feel the same way! There are a MILLION things I would love to do, get good at, and focus my time on. Unfortunately I am not independently…

Light and Motion 2009

Posted on July 13, 2009 at 9:46am 1 Comment

I just wanted to write this quick journal entry about my experience with Light and Motion prop con 2009. I now understand why people come back from hoop conventions utterly changed. Being surrounded by people that don't look at you weird when you mention hooping, poi, staff, or whatever is so incredibly comforting. Being understood for doing what I love, being accepted, and being in an environment where it is safe to make big mistakes (thanks spark!) and encouraged to make mistakes in order to…

staying positive: hooping is NOT serious business, or is it?

Posted on July 5, 2009 at 2:04pm 1 Comment

A child's toy, a novelty, a fad, fitness, relaxation, meditation. Hooping can be all of these things, but I find myself always struggling against the impulse to see hooping as SERIOUS, something I need to be good at NOW and master in order to be the best. I'm going to light and motion next weekend, an all day prop intensive with hoopers, poi spinners, and much more, where I'm surrounded by such talented people. And for that reason I feel even more pressured to be amazing, to somehow impress…

oh becoming a dancer

"if I could tell you what it meant, there would be no point in dancing it"

I have no idea who said this, but it's a quote that has meant so much to me. I've found that through hoop and belly dance that I'm being able to express myself in ways I haven't imagined. I used to get annoyed when people claimed they did something in order to express themselves, but now I think I understand so well what most people mean. through hoop dancing, I find that my self expression is not only trying to…

my first hoopdance - thoughts on videotaping oneself

Posted on June 23, 2009 at 9:49am 1 Comment

Yesterday night I decided to videotape myself. Finally armed with a tripod, I hooked up my digital camera and set it to record video. My first experience looking at myself "performing" was hideous. My arms were doing things that I wasn't expecting, and some of the moves I thought were my "signature" were rushed, ugly, and just downright awful. I never felt worse about my hooping, suddenly thinking "people have actually WATCHED me do this?" I wanted to quit, but instead I took a few breaths and…

Hey !
I was just flicking through some old dicussions because I am having a terrible time trying to find the black PEX tubing because I really don't like the white stuff. I've called about 10 different Hardware stores and all of them only carry the white stuff, if you have time and could let me know where you have found some I would really appreciate it !

Happy hooping Chantal

i just wrote you a long reply with specific directions. ha. hope it helps. please let me know with ANY questions!! oh and the tubing comes in 100' (which makes around ten hoops (i cut them at about 10' each) the tubing is under $30 and each connector is like 70 cents. so i figure materials cost about $30 to make 10 hoops.

Hi Ashton! The 7/8" is flexible but isn't too flexi -- basically it's not floppy ;) my thing with it is that it is super light when nothing is inside of it. I talked to Patrick about the PSI Hoops and he said the LEDs and batteries make the hoop heavier so I went with the 7/8" tubing.

I just made another glow stick hoop out of the 7/8" tubing and put 15 of the 22" necklace-style glow sticks inside of it (3 rows of 5) and it made the hoop heavier but still light enough for me to whip around. It just made it easier to control. So, if you want a good slow groove hoop, go with the heavier but if you're wanting to do breaks and quick hooping, I say the 7/8" is the way to go :-)
