I have done a decent bit of research and understand how to make the hoop, but am confused regarding all of the different specifications concerning weight, size, diameter, etc. I understand that the…

"i'm 5'0'' and started with a 40". the bigger the hoop, the more time u have between revolutions. my friend who is 5'5'' preferred a 40" over a 38" for that reason. as u get better u'll find…"

"I say start out whatever size you want to play with right now. It's all about what kind of dancing you want to do. Fast pace/ zippy moves... then a medium hoop would be best. They also wont bruise you when you move up to trying out the…"

"the 1/2'' is a bit thicker...just baaaarely heavier. i, personally, liked the feel when i gripped the 1/2'' better. it being slightly thicker, makes it a stronger tubing. regardless....they are both good sizes...the main…"

"Thank you for the insight!  What would be the advantage/disadvantage of going with a 1/2'' in to start rather than a 3/4'' tubing?  I think I'll be buying a 100' roll and then making various sizes as I…"

"Thank you so much for the advice!  I was wanting to go lighter (like a 125-100ps) but just needed some reassurance that that wouldn't be a mistake. "

"i started with a larger and heavier hoop as a beginner hooper...and gradually went to smaller and lighter hoops. I use 1/2'', 125 psi polyflex tubing when I made my first homemade hoops. I made a set of minis, and a 36''. The…"

"I started with 160 3/4. I'm your height but I'm 118lbs.  Personally if you aren't trying to spend a bunch of money to start out I would go with the 3/4 100psi.  After about three months of using the 160 I was ready to try…"

"I agree with going with 100psi and making a few different hoops out of the roll of tubing. You can always add extra tape to make it heavier, but 160 psi can be kind of painful."

"Thank you for the help!  That's really what I was concerned about...the 160 psi being too cumbersome for my size, but also not wanting to go so light that I will have a hard time learning.  I am now leaning towards the 100 psi I…"

"If your making it yourself, make a few differant sizes so you can try 'em all out! & the ones you aren't feeling you can always give to friends or sell. As for the weight I would go heavier if your a beginner, like 160 psi (: "

"Here's something else to add.  You might be considerably happy with a 3/4" 100psi PE tubing, cut to the size you think is best.  This is just enough to feel like you are geting a workout.  I would not even bother with the…"

"I like the mathematical approach! haha... 1.1x your waist in inches for a fast hoop, 1.2x for a medium speed hoop, and 1.3x for a slow hoop. If you're a beginner I'd go for slow. so 25" x 1.3=32.5" If you were over…"

Trying to make a first hoop and in need of help, please!

I have done a decent bit of research and understand how to make the hoop, but am confused regarding all of the different specifications concerning weight, size, diameter, etc. I understand that the typical adult beginners hoop is made of 1''-3/4'' poly tubing, 100-160 psi, and roughly 40'' in diameter, give or take a few inches.  I would go ahead and make a 40'' hoop out of 3/4'' 160 psi tubing, but I've also read that my height and weight should be taken into consideration.  I am not really…See More
