Groetjes!

Hi, I don´t have a car, and I will be going by train. You can get a Bayern ticket which is 20€ and allows you to travel for one day all over Bavaria by any train except the ICE and CE (the express trains) and also the local transport like buses etc. This is pretty good value for money especially as Munich local transportation is pretty expensive. If you have anybody else with you, you can also buy a Bayern Group Ticket which is the same for up to 5 people and costs 25€. Maybe we could share one, I´m not sure though, I have to check what kind of ticket I´m getting.
You could go the the german rail website (they have an english version) and look around for their offers. Also, you need to ask around in your own train station, I think that if you buy in advance you can get discounts. Someone working there should be able to advise you about what is the cheapest ticket to get to Germany.
What time do you want to come back from the Convention ? You might want to reserve the seats in advance. Also, usually it´s cheaper if you book the return journey as the same time as the "to" journey.

Groetjes,
Coretta
