A Hooping Survey, updated February 5th 2010
How old are you? 33 as of February 10th.
When did you first start hooping? April 24th, 2009
Would you call yourself a beginner, intermediate or advanced hooper? I sort of think intermediate, sometimes...then I'll hit myself in the head on a completely elementary maneuver and wonder. ;)
How often do you hoop? As often as possible while still tending to a leg injury from last year.
Do you have an indoor hoop space? Yes, my living room is big enough for basic stuff, and my gym allows usage of the aerobics studios after hours. Gotta remember to wear socks, though - the floors offer too much friction.
Is there a hoop group where you live? Several in the general area, but my schedule precludes joining them often. Still, I am trying to reach out.
Did you start it? Well...you know. No.
Would you say that you are obsessed with or addicted to hooping? That would in fact be an exceedingly safe bet.
Have you posted hooping videos? How many? Yes. Several. One has received a lot of attention.
Do you have friends nearby to hoop with? Oh yes. I'm creating hoopers where'er I go. And I am meeting local hoopers finally.
Do you teach hooping? If so, how many people have you taught? No, but I do intend to take a teacher training at some point. I think it'd be neat.
What kind of songs do you listen to while hooping? How to classify...rock, pop, some jam type stuff sometimes. Really, if it has a beat and I find myself plotting hooping to it, I'll buy it and hoop to it.
What is your favorite song right now? "Everybody" by Ingrid MIchaelson. It may seem like I am a IM fangirl, but I really only have two of her songs.
Do you buy hoops or make your own? Little of both.
Have you lost weight since starting to hoop? Hooooo yes. 15 pounds or more.
What size is your favorite hoop? Yes. I have a big sentimental soft spot for my first hoop, a big sparkly red, silver and white hoop I jokingly call Sparkly Edward.
Are you comfortable hooping by yourself in a public place? Yes. I take a hoop generally everywhere now.
How did you learn the majority of the tricks you know today? YouTube and a heaping helping of stubbornness.
Who is your favorite hoop teacher? I don't know that I have a favorite? I've learned so much from all over. Some tricks I have learned better from some hoopers than others, it just varies.
What advice would you give to to beginner hoopers? The first advice out of my mouth is invariably, "Move your hips back and forth or side to side, but don't go in a circle!" It's worked every time.
Do you fire hoop? If not, do you want to? I HAVE DUNNIT. Once. And didn't catch on fire. I took that as a good sign.
Do own an LED hoop? Where did you get it? No, but I plan to - if I go down to a size 12, that's my reward. And I really, really want one, so it looks like this might happen! Woo!
How much time do you spend on safiredance.ning? Less than I like. I am not good at social media.
What was the first trick you learned (besides waist hooping)? Like many others, it was the lift up/drop down.
What is the last trick you mastered? Hooping on one leg, then picking up the hoop from knee level and swinging into a lasso.
What trick so far was the hardest for you to learn? I am working on angles and about ready to eat my damn hoop.
Which one are you finding is almost impossible to get? Well, I keep trying the shoulder to shoulder backside pass...probably not my smartest idea. I still want to get this one.
How many hoopers would you say live in your town/city? TONS.
Have you performed hooping in front of an audience? Not per se. But 3000 people have watched my best known video, so, sort of? (OMG that still wigs me out a little)
Has anyone told you you were too old to be playing with a hula hoop? Nope. They talk about how they could never do it as a kid. Then I show them that these days, we have made technological advances in hooping. ;)
What’s the worst injury you’ve acquired from the hoop? I nearly ripped out my hair using a damaged hoop to practice duck-outs.
Have you ever hooped naked? Don't we ALL hoop naked? Heck, I have almost figured out totally stripping off while I am hooping!
Have you been to a hoop camp/retreat? Which one? I'm hoping to go to Hoop Path this year, plus a Hoop Technique workshop. Eek, meeting people.

Ups and downs, ups and downs! I haven't gotten ANYTHING done that I've wanted to do.
Still not hooping enough. I'm attending a Hoop Path workshop this weekend, but only half of it - partly because I have a wedding to attend on Saturday but partly because I don't think I could manage two days at this point on a physical level. And that is just sad.
I'm BOOOOOOOOORED. Bored in my hoop. And if I'm not bored I'm tiring out too quickly.
Which. You know. Grumps me…

First: THANK YOU to everyone who commented on Jar of Hearts, and SaFire for featuring it. For a long time I fell into the "next trick, next trick, next trick" trap, and kind of got bogged down in not being a cool hooper like everyone else. I'm fighting to find my hoopDANCE love again, and this video was part of trying to capture that. So it means a lot to me, this video, for a lot of different reasons, and it just floors me with gratitude that it seems to mean something to others as well. I…

Yeah. I'm hopeless!
My job sucked me into a pretty deep hole back in March, emotionally speaking. I finally snapped and got a new one, so that's awesome. Steady paychecks, daylight hours...it's fab. But it's taken time to adjust.
Working on hoop projects - I just helped Blythe of Punk Rock Moves put on a couple of demo sets this last weekend at the Wildflower Music Festival. SO AWESOME. Apparently I CAN be good at selling things as long as those things are hooping…

I had planned my trip to Wales for years. Planned and hoped. Sought out lodgings, had fare quotes emailed to me, started looking up Welsh hoopers.
2010 would be the year I went to Wales. WOO! For this Torchwood fangirl, that would be the ultimate vacation. Six days in Cardiff, a rented flat, hooping at the Hub, hiking the Brecon Beacons, no obligations to visit anyone or do anything I didn't want to do. No schedule, no agenda other than wandering aimlessly through a gorgeous…
