First Friday Fire Hooping-my 2nd Burn!

First Friday October 2010 in Krutch Park, Knoxville, TN, I fire hooped for the second time. More confidence and flow. I think I'm addicted.

Hoop Survey

How old are you? 26 and I feel younger than ever!

When did you first start hooping? January 2010 and addicted ever since.

Would you call yourself a beginner, intermediate or advanced hooper? Intermediate to advanced. I have so much to learn.

How often do you hoop? Pretty often. I wish I could say everyday but that's not the case.

Do you have an indoor hoop space? Yes, but I tend to hit chairs, lamps, tvs, and pianos. eek! I prefer outdoor hooping fo sure.  Sundresses, barefoot, springtime hooping is my favorite!

Is there a hoop group where you live? Yes! The Knoxville Hoopers! And I'm part of this group called Appalachian Flow Arts.  Check us at www.appalachianflowarts.com. Also there's a group called Hoop Exchange and one up in Morristown led by Ali Solspinner, one of my hoop sistas.

Did you start it? No, but I love being a part of it. That is, Knoxville Hoopers. Charity (Hoop Bug), Lauren (Lala), Brooke, David, Pam, Carah, and all. Ali and I started AFA.  We have many beautiful members of our troupe! <3 Ali, Carah, Glenda, David, Lauren, Laura, Kara, and myself!

Would you say that you are obsessed with or addicted to hooping? Totally, I love it. Whenever I feel stress or tension a little hooping relieves it all.

Have you posted hooping videos? How many? Yes *blush. I probably will look back on them later and roll my eyes but it's all about the process right?

Do you have friends nearby to hoop with? Yes, and I love them all!

Do you teach hooping? If so, how many people have you taught? No, only to some of my art students at the school I teach at that beg me to teach them. =)

What kind of songs do you listen to while hooping? jam, reggae, dub, dubstep, electronic, rock, well, anything that's on my ipod.

What is your favorite song right now? To hoop to? Really digging Big Gigantic, StS9, Bassnectar, PantYraid....

Do you buy hoops or make your own? I bought a beautiful ribbon hoop that Charity made for my first one, but now I make my own.

Have you lost weight since starting to hoop? Yes! And inches off my waist. Pretty wicked.

What size is your favorite hoop? I've been rocking a 1/2" 34" hoop as of recent.

Are you comfortable hooping by yourself in a public place? I am getting more and more comfortable with it, but LED hooped for the first time in public not too long ago. That was a whole new experience of audience. *UPDATE-It's funny reading this because now I perform all of the time!

How did you learn the majority of the tricks you know today? Charity (HoopBug), my instructor. She totally rocks. I would try to learn tricks via YouTube and work on them for weeks, then Charity would teach me in like 10 minutes and I would get it! It is so helpful to see someone in person, who knows my style and technique, demonstrate and help.

Who is your favorite hoop teacher? Charity, but I love to watch some hoopers on hoopcity and youtube. Some of my favorites include Tiana (Wantonamara), Shakti Sunfire, Brecken, Safire...

What advice would you give to to beginner hoopers? Just have fun! Learn how to get in the zone. Hooping centers my soul and when you find that zone, you lose all inhibitions. Finding the flow is empowering.

Do you fire hoop? If not, do you want to? Ah....I love fire!  So I have fire hooped on a number of occasions and actually just got my fire performer insurance and ordered quick wicks today! Yay!

Do own an LED hoop? Where did you get it? CosmicHooper aka Rob Grader.  It's a sectional and AWESOME.  I also made one-it's harder than it looks.

How much time do you spend on Hoop City Hooping Community? Too much time. haha.

What was the first trick you learned (besides waist hooping)? Float up and Float downs. That was the first "difficult" trick that I really had to practice.

What is the last trick you mastered? Ummmm, I have been working on cateyes (isopops) but not mastered. Working on flow.  Leg hooping-ugh.

What trick so far was the hardest for you to learn? Arm Hooping reversals

Which one are you finding is almost impossible to get? Having a difficult time bringing leg hooping back up in anyway.

How many hoopers would you say live in your town/city? Hmmm, I don't know. There are a lot of festival hoopers around here but not a lot of hoopers that come out regularly. Maybe 30 or so????

Have you performed hooping in front of an audience? Yes. @_@

Has anyone told you you were too old to be playing with a hula hoop? Haha! No, but I do have a babyface. ^_^ I mostly have a lot of people who ask what hooping is. Most people are quite fascinated.

What’s the worst injury you’ve acquired from the hoop? Aww man, some major hand, arm, and nose bruises. I did cut the tip of my nose once and have a scar now. War wound-epic.

Have you ever hooped naked? Yes, shhh! Had to try it. The hoop loves naked skin. Sticks well.

Have you been to a hoop camp/retreat? Which one? wishful thinking...

I hoop because I love it not because I want to put on a show

Posted on May 17, 2010 at 7:26am 3 Comments

Hello All!

So I have been hooping for about 5 months now. In December a friend asked me if I wanted to take hoop lessons with her starting in January. For years I had seen hoopers at music concerts and festivals and so of course, naturally, I said YES! Jess, Carah, and I began hoop lessons at the end of January with Charity (Hoop Bug). Immediately, I was addicted.

I have never been good at Yoga. I can sit still very well, but love being able to center…
