Shelley "HoopyChick" Gilbertson has not received any gifts yet
How old are you?I'm 43. My birthday is April 27, 1967.
When did you first start hooping? April 30, 2010. I got my first hoop, a book, and two videos from Hoop Girl from my parents as my 43rd birthday present! Fabulous!!!
Would you call yourself a beginner, intermediate or advanced hooper? I'll have to go with "intermediate beginner" at this point.
How often do you hoop? Usually daily for 30 min. to 2 or 3 hours. Depends on the day. I've also been known to skip a day or two and not hoop at all! Balance is good.
Do you have an indoor hoop space? Yes. It's not pretty (unfinished basement - I'm working on jazzing it up though), and I don't have much vertical space so tosses and any overhead moves are out for the colder months, but I'm grateful to have a place to hoop inside so that I don't have to go out and seek someplace in the winter.
Is there a hoop group where you live? No, I live in Smallville USA! I think the closest hoop group would be 1.5 hours away in Minneapolis.
Would you say that you are obsessed with or addicted to hooping? No, obsession and addiction conjure up not-so-good things in my mind. I would say I'm in LOVE with hooping. That's a much lovlier way to say it.
Have you posted hooping videos? How many? Just a few at Vimeo and YouTube which I've linked here at HC. I'm getting braver about it.
Do you have friends nearby to hoop with? Alas, no, but I'm okay with that. I enjoy hooping in solitude although on occasion I wouldn't mind hooping with peeps.
Do you teach hooping? If so, how many people have you taught? No. I think about doing it one day though - when I'm much, much better! ;)
What kind of songs do you listen to while hooping? I like anything dancey. I prefer flowing more melodious songs rather than anything like rap, punk or anything real hard-edged. I don't mind listening to stuff like that once in awhile, but I don't want to hoop to it. Popular dance music, jazzed up classical (like Bond), ethnic stuff (like Middle Eastern, latin, Indian, etc.). It's weird because a lot of music I like when I'm not hooping is stuff I have a hard time hooping to.
What is your favorite song right now? I'm really into Bond lately. Their popped up classical stuff really makes me feel like flowing.
Do you buy hoops or make your own? Buy, buy, buy!!!!
Have you lost weight since starting to hoop? No, but I ddin't really need to and wasn't trying.
What size is your favorite hoop? Currently 36" or 38". I prefer something lighter like 1/2", 125 psi34" although I'm waiting on my first PPE hoop. I still often grab some of my older bigger and/or heavier hoops to learn new tricks.
Are you comfortable hooping by yourself in a public place? I don't do it very often other than in my own front yard and the neighbors are used to it. It would probably depend on the place, but I think I'd hoop in public.
How did you learn the majority of the tricks you know today? DVDs from HoopGirl and Hoopnotica, on-line tutorials, and [my favorite!!] Sandra's on-line classes here at HC. They're the best!!! I cannot recommend them highly enough!
Who is your favorite hoop teacher? As far as teaching ability, I have to say Sandra. She has a gift for making things understandable. I also find Caroleeena to be a very good educator. The two of them could rule the hooping education world!
What advice would you give to to beginner hoopers? Enjoy the journey and savor each step!!!
Do you fire hoop? If not, do you want to? No, not yet, and I'm not sure. So far, I don't have any burning (LOL!) desire to, but things might change. I imagine at some point I'll be looking to take things to another level.
Do you own an LED hoop? Where did you get it? Not yet. My goal is to get one for my 44th birthday next April and also to celebrate 1 year of hooping!
How much time do you spend on Hoop City Hooping Community? Way too much! I check in several times a day.
What was the first trick you learned (besides waist hooping)? Lift ups and float downs from waist hooping. I felt so beautiful and graceful to be able to do those moves!! Honestly, though I still love doing and watching a really pretty lift up or float down. I find them magical in their simplicity!
What is the last trick you mastered? Weaving into a pass between the legs. I love jumping!! I can do it with both hands, and I'm happy about that! I've also gotten fairly proficient at knee hooping in the past couple of weeks.
What trick so far was the hardest for you to learn? Chest hooping!! I still don't feel I have it totally perfected either with arms in or arms out in my dominant current (to the left), and I still have quite a way to go going to the right. I'm not sure why this has been such a struggle for me. Maybe because I want it so much. I love watching people chest hoop very naturally and gracefully, and I love arm weaving with it. Sigh.
Which one are you finding is almost impossible to get? Chest hooping (see above), and I also struggle with vertical step throughs.
How many hoopers would you say live in your town/city? 1 - that would be me!
Have you performed hooping in front of an audience? Other than the 8 zillion little girls in my neighborhood, no. I love the little girls though. They think I'm a rock star!!
Has anyone told you you were too old to be playing with a hula hoop? Heavens no!
What’s the worst injury you’ve acquired from the hoop? I've been fortunate, other than some soreness and minor bruises, the hoop has been kind to me.
Have you ever hooped naked? Mostly naked - I had to go topless when I first started trying to chest hoop! I'm thankful for the indoor hoop space! ;)
Have you been to a hoop camp/retreat? Which one? No, not yet. Someday!

Happy New Year to me!! I just signed up for both classes in the Budding Series and the Breaks & Reversals class. I am so beyond excited!
So, my hooping goal for 2011 is to slow down and concentrate on my ultra-focused style of practicing. I've been having great results with this practice method (see previous journal entry). I feel it's important for me to really perfect (to the extent possible - is anything truly ever perfect in hooping?) the moves…

So, four days ago I switched the focus of my practice back to more of a technique focus as opposed to a flow focus. Instead of just turning on the music and letting things unfold as they will, I am working on particular tricks. I'm hoping that indirectly this will help me with flow, which I found myself struggling with the past few weeks.
Instead of letting myself consciously pick moves to work on (we all know that usually means picking something we're relatively adept with…

It'll be two weeks tomorrow since I picked up the minis and started Sandra's Mini Hooping Class. I am really enjoying them. My poor regular hoop has been a bit neglected, but not too much! It's hard to find hooping time during this busy holiday season. I'm actually looking forward to the doldrums of January and February when life is quieter. I'll be able to spend much more time hooping. I have yet to feel like I've actually "mastered" anything, but I am making progress! Am working on things…

I'm stuck in a loop with the hula hoop. When I was a little girl I was abused in every which way. Often I was grounded to my bedroom, with two bathroom visits and a dinner release. In my bedroom held my boom box. Loud music would draw my angry step father towards my room. But I had to dance, so from a young age I would take a few preventable beatings so I could dance in my bedroom. Pretending I'm dancing on stage with Brain Setzer, I had trained myself to ingore reality while I dance. Even…

I haven't posted for a very long time, but I have something worth sharing. In the last couple of years, I have advanced enough to start teaching and I absolutley love my classes. All my students are wonderful its the most favorite part of my week. Through a very unfortunate series of events, every hoop I own, including my hoops for students, were taken and no longer in my possession. I was so upset ,not for myself, but my students would have nothing to take class with. There…
