Hoop Flow and fluency

Posted on December 3, 2010 at 3:09pm 3 Comments

This is something I wrote on Hooping.org for the Flow Zone forum which Khan Wong and I co-moderate. Check it out!

I had a realization some years ago that my ability to tap into Flow with my hoop was very much like my ability to speak a second language. I”ve never been quick with words, even in my own language, and I never really felt I had a talent for learning another tongue. When I was 27 years old, rather late in life for learning a new language, I moved to Japan for what I…

Burning Man memories, in no particular order.

Seeing a double rainbow and then watching the moon rise over the playa as we approached Black Rock City for the first time.

Becoming aware of a newfound ability to wait patiently in line in an RV, inching forward, for hours. This is not in my nature and I found myself surrendering to this new pace.

First morning on the playa, walking to Center Camp with Onyx, Stilgar and Audree for an amazingly delicious cappuccino and some sweet live music.

My first solo walk…

An incredibly honor:

I was interviewed recently by Leah Rapposelli Troiano and it was an incredible honor as well as a very interesting process for me. I don't always put my hooping experience to words and this challenge of answering her thoughtful questions was very fulfilling. Here's Leahs's article:

Thundershyne's story

Posted on February 17, 2010 at 9:35pm 0 Comments

There is a world of difference between compassion and pity. Compassion acknowledges the struggle in being human, without in any way denying the inherent strength we humans have to overcome, if not physically, then spiritually, just about every curveball life throws our way.

Thundershyne is a hoopdancer who is both blind and deaf. She is remarkable, not only for her resilience and fortitude in fighting her brain tumor and her wacky sense of humor, but also because she is a damn fine…

One-Handed Helicopter Move

Posted on February 16, 2010 at 12:05pm 6 Comments

I've had so many folks ask me about the one-handed helicopter move so I thought I'd condense my responses to a journal entry here for reference.

The first time I ever saw the One-Handed Helicopter Move was in a video of a Russian hoopdancer and I had thought it at the time kind of unattainable, like many things. Later, I saw a more condensed version of that move in one of Brecken's first videos where she spun the hoop around one of her hands for a full revolution in a way that…

Hi Beth,

I was at hoop camp 2012 Santa Cruz and at Baxters workshop in SF.  I'm not a big public profiler but wanted to be in touch with you.  I have video footage of you from the hoop camp and wanted to talk clothing with you. My email is egiannone@mac.com.  My name's Ellie.  I'd love to hear from you if you want to email me.  Thanks and am in awe of your hooping.

Oh Beth, this makes my day!  I really hope to connect with you there...will you be teaching officially?  I'll be volunteering in some capacity, and will set an intention to find you sometime during the retreat.  How sweet to come with your daughter...my kids love to hoop, too, but are still too little for a big retreat (3 and 5).

And, I have been hooping to the song "Exactly" - thanks to you and your friend - and it's been so powerful. To reciprocate, here is another song of spirit that I love to hoop to:  http://music.relicpro.com/shine/

Blessings,

Ashley
