Give peas a chance.

Yesterday I went to the park. I practiced old tricks and new and had a fabulous time in the process.

Several people stopped and watched, and one group of boys even gawked. We're talking pointing, open mouths and everything. For a minute there, I thought they'd come over and ask about the hoop, but they walked off. Short attention spans, I guess.

Someone did approach me soon after, however. The funny thing? He was the last person I would have expected, and he asked a question…

Shout-outs

I got a shout-out yesterday. Not sure what kind it was...

I took two of my hoops and my tunes to a local walking track after work to play for a while before I went home. It was a beautiful day - sunny, a bit breezier than I would have liked, but still a great day to be outdoors with my hoops. I found a spot in the grassy area inside the track and started rocking the larger hoop, doing mostly off-body stuff and having a good time. The hoop went flying several times, and when it…

First post!

I love this community, at the moment I am but a lurker though... oh well. I also regret not being able to afford SaFire's classes ): But hopefully at some point this year I will be able to!

So, hooping wise. I went busking in town with my hoop for the first time, only managed to get $14 which I guess wasn't too bad considering there seemed to be no one in town. A lot of people stopped to watch, though rarely gave any money. I guess that's okay though, at least they seemed interested!…

Sudden Tragedy & Self Discovery

I don't know if any of you noticed, but I have been MIA from HC for an entire week. I took an extreme blow in my life that has sent me into a tailspin. I found out that my long-term boyfriend had been cheating on me for a couple of months with one of my supposed best friends. For obvious reasons this has caused me an immense amount of emotional, mental, and physical pain. I had several panic attacks and meltdowns last week. I got physically sick to the point that I was throwing up and…

Thank you, Hoop Mentor. :)

Almost six months ago, I was in a bit of a pickle, as they say. Too much writing and too much working had given me eyestrain and carpal tunnel, one right after the other. I knew that if I didn't get myself the heck away from the computer, these problems would only worsen.

The problem was, I didn't know what I'd do with myself. I didn't have a single hobby that didn't involve looking at something up close while using my hands. Jewelry? Hands. Painting? Hands. Cooking? Hands. Hand…

My First (tongue-in-cheek) Tutorial

I went to the beach yesterday for the first time this year, and I took a couple of my hoops to practice. It was a gorgeous day, with just enough cloud cover to keep the sun from being too bright and hot. It was late afternoon and the tide was low, which gave me plenty of wet, packed sand to stand on, which meant I wouldn't have to be concerned about turning an ankle or injuring a knee (or burying my feet in loose sand).

I found a place that wasn't full of people, dogs, kites,…

Second Summer in the Hoop 3-28-10

So, summer is coming on. Which means festivals and concerts are coming my way. Which means hoops are going to be hitting the green grass pretty soon. We all know how great it is to get to hoop on your front lawn or in you living room or basement with the cd player going, but nothing compares to hooping to live music. nothing is as good as that for me. Last year was my first summer with my hoops, and it was by far my best summer, i felt like a beautiful fairy in the hoop, i knew i was beautiful,…

skipping :)

It's been a day of reflection so far. Changing the bedsheets multiple

times because you have a child sick with a stomach virus leads to that,

I think. Up at 4 am and again at 5:45...early morning rendezvous with

the washing machine in the quiet darkness of the corner of the

basement., the being so tired you want to fall asleep yet having one

eye open in case she's sick again...you're running low on blankets. I

wouldn't trade holding her hair back and changing her…

Snoe. Down

If you have not gone to see Moe. you should get out there this summer for summer camp or Moe. Down. They are AMAZING, and there are a few hoopers who attend. There was an outside event yesterday where I brought my hoops and ended up hooping with this (barley 5 year old girl) named Abby. She was the CUTEST thing I have seen with a hoop. It felt so nice to hoop outside with live music for my first…

Raving dance party at the old folk's home!

Okay, so it was a raving dance party at an old folks recreational centre (which no one came to unlock for the DJ hosting the dance, so we moved it to his church's gym, lol). It was tons of fun! This marks the first time that I have hooped in front of lots of people (as in, more than my neighbours, or the few people by the pool in Mexico!) It was really cool. I made sure not to hoop all the time, gave other people lots of space to dance (especially the country songs... we have a lot of…

Yatta!

Yatta! I got leg hooping! I've been able to get it to go around just above my knees if it accidentaly fell down there for a while now. No way on earth was it coming back up, though. Today, though, I got it to go down and come back up again. Not just once, so it wasn't a fluke. (Still a no go in reverse current though.) What really helped me was figuring out that I needed to have my legs fairly far apart to get it to move around right. I think they're about at shoulder width. If I want it to…

Teaching Hula Hooping to the Blind

The Governor Morehead School for the Blind has started bringing kids on field trips to our hoop jams. It is such a delight!!! It has also been a learning experience. There are some challenges to teaching hooping to non-sighted people and I'd like to share what I've learned so far. I also want to encourage others to reach out to the blind to teach them hooping. Obesity is a huge problem among the blind. It's not impossible for them to go for a jog or to the gym but it ain't easy. Travel is not a…

Making hoops is so self satisfying.

I made a hoop about 39' (didnt measure just guesstimated) 1" tubing. The only thing on it so far is a solid wrap of hockey tape.

Im not sure what I want to put on this hoop, so i'm going to leave it plain for now. I was kind of worried that it would turn out a wonky shape because my old roommate made a bunch of hoops with the same tubing and they all turned out bent weird all over the place.

but mine turned out perfect!! its a perfect circle! whew!

I've been practicing the…

learning knee hooping

so my goal for this week was to "get" knee hooping. And I've "got" it, I just don't have the bringing it back up. haha. I've been practicing all week and I've got to tell you, my thighs are sore!. I've never been this sore from hooping since I started! I'm actually surprised. No bruises, but wow.... sore. So I'm giving myself a break from it for a few days. Thing is... I know what to do, it's just doing it.
