The Healing Hoop

... Tissues, Coffee...

and hoops.

That's been my existence these past few days. I have succumb to the cold and flu season early on, despite my best, Purell laden, intentions...

Now, here's the thing. Even with my sore throat, runny nose, achy EVERYTHING... I still couldn't resist my hoop. I would look at it and think... "now, come on - you know that's not a good plan. You are already dizzy. Just lay and rest. Rest! No... no don't do it... "

but - alas…

Bruises be gone!

After practicing for two weeks, and now that the baseball-sized bruise on my left hip (from my first hooping experience in 25 years!) I am making progress! I can't believe how much I enjoy doing something I TOTALLY forgot about over the last two and a half decades. I'm hooked, and am really happy to have found this site. I had no idea so many people were into this. Yay!! :)

Great Hooping Experiences

On Saturday I had an awesome day/evening of hooping. A few of my friends and I went to a small street festival in Madison, WI. There were several stages with different types of music, ethnic food stands, and small stand with jewelry and clothing. I was hooping throughout the day and having a great time. I even got approached by a photographer who said that he wanted to do a photo shoot with me hooping!

The best part of the day was later in the evening. We were by the electronic music…

Dear Diary... it's been 45 days since I first tried Hooping

After our brief love affair at Shambhala I was hooked.

Since then I have purchased the first two lessons offered here at Hoop City. and I can now say with some confidence that I am a true beginner hoopist.

I can waist hoop, I can do a slow vortex, I can hand hoop, and I just learned how to chest hoop!

This is some feat for me, as I do not possess any dance skillz or eye hand co-ordination, or strength or movement goodness in general....

Today I…

Hours upon Hours....

I hoop for hours at a time... I LOVE IT!!!! I just taught my "hooping buddy" how to keep the hula hoop up last night! Today, however, it is raining.... I'll probably just go to the park and practice under th gazebo... Or who knows, maybe I'll play in the rain!!!!

Being Upstaged by a kid half my age...

So I've been hooping for a couple months now. Most afternoons/nights I hoop out front on my driveway. The 8 year old girl next door has started coming over to jump rope and hoop with my sister and I (and occasionally our mom)...when my neighbor started a week ago she was using the smaller size of my hoopnotica travel hoop and could barely keep it up...Two days later she was doing fine hooping with a much larger and lighter hoop I made. That day she saw me neck hooping, something that took me…

I haven't much turned on a computer these last weeks. I keep thinking of journaling and I don't.

I started my dance class and love it, though I missed last week because of a horrible pinched nerve. The teachers at the academy are very good, and very thorough. They are treating us like dancers, not mere hobbyists, which is more than I expected and is lovely.

I got my prize hoop in the mail and it is adorable. Very wee and light, perfect to practice off body…

What a time to have hooping in my life...

... because i'm very sure that I wouldn't have survived this on my own. At all.

This past Saturday, my boyfriend of almost 6 months decided to tell me that he wanted to break up with me, because he hadn't been in love with me for the past 2 months of our relationship and had been lying to himself AND me about it and feigning affection. I kind of saw it coming, but when it did, it was like a tornado had come along and ripped up a piece of my life by the roots, taking ragged pieces of…

Workshop in PDX

I had a great time at the free workshop in Kenilworth park on Tuesday. I'm not sure if it was the hooping that afternoon, the sad attempts at unicycle riding a little bit later, hooping on rollarskates, the two hour workshop, or the long wandering walk in search of the burn afterward, but my legs sure were sore. I consider that the sign of a great afternoon!

Oh, and thanks to the lovely lass that climbed in my giant LED hoop with me!

Hoopers really are just cool people

So on Tuesday night, my sister and I ventured to our first hooping class. WOw! But before I go into that-- A little background first...

So far, we'd learned how to waist hoop from our friend gloria a year ago, and then picked up a hoop again at the beginning of august and since then were all self taught. I'd watch videos on youtube and teach myself in prospect park (i had soooo many bruises-- the ones on my shoulder when I was learning to shoulder hoop were so gnarly!! People on the…

The Business of Hooping

ONe thing that seems to happen after becoming an avid hooper is that you learn how to contruct your own hoops. New tricks seem like they would work better with a smaller, bigger, heavier, or lighter hoop - you watched a video and were in awe of the mini's with which someone was rocking out. You must have them. ALL!

So you start making a few hoops... You learn how to constuct and tape and your collection slowly (or rapidly) builds - then, one day you realize - hey - I could probably…

New obsession

The ones involving circles seem to stick.

Dead obsessions: Devil sticking, parkour.

Weakening obsessions: Yoga classes - Now I just stretch at home.

Live obsessions: Bicycling- 1.5 years

DJ'ing- 4 years

Now hoopdance?

It seems just dorky enough to be something that might work for me. I'm clumsy, can't juggle or do anything choreographed, can't do sports that involve balls or points, but boy do I like to move.

I hope so. I haven't danced…

need a new hoop...or want one..

I want to order a fancy hoop, maybe a collapsible one. But idk where to order one, I mean I don't really want to pay ridiculous shipping charges. Totally need to try and make my own too. The ones with water in them are kinda crazy, I wonder if they'd freeze. Oh so many ideas! Hopefully they will come to fruition.

I think I'm going to start my list of random places or just places in general I've hooped. Like rain, snow, futon skeleton, water bed, regular bed, stool, back of a truck, a…

The Story

"How did you get into hula hooping?"

I was first amazed by hoop dancing (as most people are amazed by the first sight of it) in May of 2008. I was about to graduate from UC Davis, it was a Sunday, and I was on the quad with three other friends listening to music and talking about our future endeavors.

Across the quad was a girl in a turquoise skirt with a hoop revolving around her hand. It was beautiful, and she wasn't doing anything more then practicing her hand hooping,…

Thank you, SaFire

This past Sunday (Sept. 13, 2009) I met my mentor, my inspiration, the person who taught me the basic tricks of hooping, whose tutorials I would memorize and then replicate on the grassy quad until each skill was accomplished.. I met SaFire. The creator of this wonderful space.

I traveled only 20 minutes to San Francisco's Saint Mary's Park on a drizzly afternoon with four other hooping fanatics. We searched the park for Sandra, holding hoops in the air, venturing through the park in…

One Year in the Hoop and a New Goal: Precision.

So the thirteenth of September marked my one year hoopiversary, one year from the day I made my very first hoop and gave it a spin. Since then, I've been power-teaching myself to learn as many new tricks as I can, to fill my bag with lots of toys to impress and wow people.

I think, a year in, I've done a pretty good job at trick collecting. I've also got a regular twice a week class I teach, and I'm performing for audiences at least once, if not more, a month. I've traveled to North…

this and that

This has been a pretty awesome weekend hoop wise. Friday I got home from school to find that the 3 DVDs I ordered from hoop girl arrived. They also came with a bumper sticker that says 'I love hooping'! So I checked the DVDs out, I know a lot of the moves but there were a bunch of moves that I still don't know. That night my little sister had a bunch of friends over for a bonfire and they discovered my hoops. So the six of them hooped for around 15 minutes. A few couldn't even keep the hoop up,…

Burning Man 2009

Well we're back from Burning Man 2009. Burning Man is an amazing place, the most friendly vacation spot on the planet. Saw lotsa hoopers, fire shows, and very talented performers. Getting fit

For a while I've been feeling tired and heavy. I've been hooping but not as consistently as when I started. Has hooping changed me?

I started hooping a couple of months ago...my mom has commented a few times on how glad she is that I found hooping. At first I wasn't really sure what she meant by that, but I think I get it now. I've never been a good athelete, I don't play any sports or belong to any teams. I've also never had a lot of confidence in me and what I can do..I tend to think that something is too scary or different and hold myself back from trying. Not so revolutionary =-(

The Hoop Revolution at Koken Art Factory was a dazzling calliope of artwork, sound, light, and skill. Unfortunately the show was changed from an all-ages event to adults only less than a week before, without adequate notice. When we reached the door we were hassled by a cop who initially refused to accept the reality that I’m 24. We eventually made it in, but the Scattered Stars were less fortunate. The Spiral

~The Spiral~

Between the worlds,

I waited in a time that is no time, a place that is no place

I sought the portal, the spirit thread, the path through the veil.

And yet there was no key to unlock that elusive door.

"Give me a sign, show me the way"

I whispered.

From the hidden shadows a voice replied.

“You know…you know…”

The beat of ancient hoofs drummed incessantly and loudly on the land and on my soul.

Overwhelmed,

Dizzy,

So much to do....so little time

It seems that with a full time job, teaching hooping classes, getting my son to band and his job, practicing hooping, promoting my classes, cooking, cleaning the house (notice that came last ;), there is no time left. I ordered my new hoop a few days ago, (a hynotica travel hoop) and I am eagerly awaiting it's arrival. I've been sitting at my computer surfing the net, and filling up on watching others show off their stuff on video. I've been so inspired, I can barely sit still. I can hardly wait.

A couple weeks ago, I celebrated my 50th birthday...my back hurts, I'd like to loose a few pounds, build energy, increase stamina, tone up, and strengthen my core. I know how important it is to exercise,…

Birthday Party!

My daughter is turning three next week, and we're having this awesome party for her and one of my friend's daughters, who is turning 5. It's gonna be awesome. It's at a park, and we're having face painting, a bracelet making area, a happy hardcore dj, a hooping area, games, and this bomb rainbow pinata. It's gonna be super fun. I'm making hoops today for the hooping area. I'm making rainbow cake, and we're having a taco bar. I have a ton of homework, though. I need to clone myself....

let me confess this before i go on: i have most of my hooping breakthroughs when i've got a bit of a buzz going. i think it's because i'm loosened up physically, and i'm more interested in having fun and not worrying so much about how OMG i suck at hooping.

anyways, so the boyfriend and i took the dog out so he could run around and do his business while we played with our respective big kid toys (my hoop and his…

People Hatin on Hoop Dancers!

So me and my wonderful friend Suzanne just started up a Sunday Spin Day at our local park! This past sunday was the first and it went sooo well! We had quite a few girls show up to hoop and a group full of amazing drummers and guitarists to play music for us! I had so much fun!

The only thing that bothers me (and I know I shouldn't let it but I cant help it)are all the ignorant fearful people out there that immediately degrade something new to them!

We were all minding our own…

It's been a month now..

So, it's been just a little over a month since I've started hooping. Move-in day for college was this past Saturday and I'm finally settled in. My parents asked me if I was going to bring my hoop with me and I said "Of course!!" within one second of them asking.

Saturday night our RA, Paige, was stopping by our rooms to check up on us, and she saw my hoop. She asked about it and asked what else I could do with it. I told her about how I got started hooping and different things that…

You want some hoop? I can help you out.

STORY TIME! Writing is another one of my favorite things to do... so If you don't mind, I'm gonna practice now. =)

I work at a toy store. When their summer collection came out, they had an assortment of plastic hoops & skip-its. The hoops were child sized and weightless; I'm already spoiled by the poly hoops & grip tape, so the best part was the trio of flashing LED lights activated by bumping it. Lucky me, in between maintaining the store, there's always time to play! As…

Bad hoop day

yea. today is a bad hoop day. i've been working on my routine for the hooprama hoop troupe audition next sunday and I can't even get simple moves right today. I keep bumping the hoop into my leg or launching it into something nearby or dropping it....everything is just going wrong! Out of about 30 attempts or so to hoop to the song, I've successfully completed one. I'm so frustrated now, I don't even know if I still want to audition. Humble Hooper

I bought a hoop a few years ago but never really used it seriously until I started to go back to school in 2008. My son was 3 years old, and I had been living a quite active lifestyle until then. The sedentary lifestyle of classrooms and studying got me down; I need activity to keep not just my body but my mind healthy. Being a student, I was poor, of course, so I didn't have many opportunities to treat myself, go out for dinners with my partner, go on family vacations, and the like. And since…

Anyone want any Hoopnotica DVDs?

I have a friend who sort of collects hobbies. I might have gotten her interested in hooping, but she never really did much with it after we explored it a bit. She bought a hoop and both hoopnotica dvds. She's moving from Boston to Seattle in the beginning of September and she's looking to unload some stuff. I've pretty much stolen her hoop from her, but she's still got both of the Hoopnotica dvds. I'm wondering if anyone here would like them. I'm not sure if she's selling them or just giving…

Hooping in the woods

I must do this again. I hooped in the woods today. I had taken the boys to meet some friends and their kids, and I took hoopy, and I did a few drills while they sat and chatted, and then my friends daughter came over and put her I-pod on the ground near me and said "here you can dance to that", and she played some Christina Aguilera for me. I hooped for ages to it, and I actually felt like I was dancing, for the first time ever. Had an awesome time and my day felt better because the hooping…

Firstly, I have GOT to thank everyone who voted for my little video in the "What Hooping Means To Me" contest. I entered at the urging of several more seasoned hoopers, and I was concerned with the reception I'd get.

My story isn't really happy - I was diagnosed with depression at the age of nine. NINE. It sucks a lot when it gets me, you know? And there are people out there who tell you to snap out of it or get over it, it's just being sad.

Identity and Hooping

Becoming "a hooper" has changed my whole identity - or, rather, completed it.

Sure, I had a decent idea of who I was before the hoop - but it was a work in progress at best. Describing myself always consisted of those horribly bland adjectives that everyone uses - "smart, funny..." and of course under hobbies, the ubiquitous, "likes to read." Ugh.

Man! I wanted an exciting hobby. Windsurfing. Mountain Climbing. Cave Diving. But, those things took a LOT of time, money,…

This past week I've just been trying a variety of tricks and see what I'm able to do.

I've learned how to step through vertically, but I can only get in on one side smoothly.

I've learned how to chest hoop, but with my arms above my head.

I've learned how to shoulder hoop, but that only happens every so often.

I've learned how to hoop with one knee, but I tend to hop around and can't stay still, foot planted to the grounded.

I've learned how to do a vortex, but…

So I visualized having 5 students at my class and the next day - out of nowhere - I had them! It was totally amazing! I had sold one of my hoops at our local flea market at cost to one of the nannies, and I guess her employer tried it and loved it. So she brought a friend. Now I've suddenly got people contacting me everyday! I'm thinking about expanding to a central location and selling hoops at a couple of local shopping "fairs".
