Well we're back from Burning Man 2009. Burning Man is an amazing place, the most friendly vacation spot on the planet. Saw lotsa hoopers, fire shows, and very talented performers. I went to two hoop jams, one was a 21st birthday party for a guy named Prometheus, the other was with the VW Bus Camp hoop jam. Both were during the day and quite hot - no shade. I tried the largest hoop (at least twice as big as mine) made by a man from No California. It was soooo slow, I could not raise it above my…

For a while I've been feeling tired and heavy. I've been hooping but not as consistently as when I started. So a couple weeks ago I decided I want to start feeling lighter and more energetic so I've drastically cut down on my meat intake. So the girl who used to eat beef every day now eats meat only once a week. Saturdays are my meat days and tomorrow is my second meat day. I can't believe I survived 2 weeks, but really it wasn't that bad. I'll admit that some days I crave beef and I've…

I started hooping a couple of months ago...my mom has commented a few times on how glad she is that I found hooping. At first I wasn't really sure what she meant by that, but I think I get it now. I've never been a good athelete, I don't play any sports or belong to any teams. I've also never had a lot of confidence in me and what I can do..I tend to think that something is too scary or different and hold myself back from trying. Then I found hooping...and it's had an impact on who I am. I'm…

The Hoop Revolution at Koken Art Factory was a dazzling calliope of artwork, sound, light, and skill. Unfortunately the show was changed from an all-ages event to adults only less than a week before, without adequate notice. When we reached the door we were hassled by a cop who initially refused to accept the reality that I’m 24. We eventually made it in, but the Scattered Stars were less fortunate. My hoop-sisters drove 3 ½ hours only to be turned away, because Virtuous Luna (regardless of her…

Last night I lit my fire hoop for the first time, I was with friends and our children, we had a fire, made wishes on paper and put them in the fire. We lit a sky lantern and had fire poi
...and then with adrenaline coursing through my veins, and my heart beating with nerves and excitement....I stood inside my hoop, as two friends lit the wicks...it felt ritualistic and special, the children were whooping, my female friends were encouraging...
And then I was off....the roar…

Between the worlds,
I waited in a time that is no time, a place that is no place
I sought the portal, the spirit thread, the path through the veil.
And yet there was no key to unlock that elusive door.
"Give me a sign, show me the way"
From the hidden shadows a voice replied.
“You know…you know…”
The beat of ancient hoofs drummed incessantly and loudly on the land and on my soul.

Being a student, I was poor, of course, so I didn't have many opportunities to treat myself, go out for dinners with my partner, go on family vacations, and the like. And since…

I must do this again. I hooped in the woods today. I had taken the boys to meet some friends and their kids, and I took hoopy, and I did a few drills while they sat and chatted, and then my friends daughter came over and put her I-pod on the ground near me and said "here you can dance to that", and she played some Christina Aguilera for me. I hooped for ages to it, and I actually felt like I was dancing, for the first time ever. Had an awesome time and my day felt better because the hooping…

i found myself taking a break most recently w/ my hoop before i went to underground sound (which was amazing!) i felt bad at first b/c i wasnt giving my hoop the most attention that it should. but when i picked it up again abt a week before i left i found myself finding new styles and new tricks . i think its probably important to take breaks so you dont wear yourself down and get discouraged. when i was at the ugs there were a lot of beautiful hoopers there with many different hoops and…

I can't believe how much my life has changed this past year. never would i have imagined everything i've seen/done. If I were asked last year, if i thought i would be so in love with John, happy in our home, still working towards my degree, falling in love with a completely different music scene, and most of all, that I would be hooping. I would have laughed. Everything Ive done this year, especially in the last few months has been such a change. I saw phish 4 times, and I was the girl who…

Coming back from hooping on break, one of my favorite supervisors stopped me and said, you know, if I ever start my own company, I'll hire you to hula hoop at events because it makes people happy to watch you. They would watch and be happy and all, man, I wish I could hula hoop.
I grinned at him and joked, sure, and I could have hoops there so that they could try to hoop.
Ha, yeah, he laughed. I could make you the CEO of Hula Hooping. In fact,…

Firstly, I have GOT to thank everyone who voted for my little video in the "What Hooping Means To Me" contest. I entered at the urging of several more seasoned hoopers, and I was concerned with the reception I'd get.
My story isn't really happy - I was diagnosed with depression at the age of nine. NINE. It sucks a lot when it gets me, you know? And there are people out there who tell you to snap out of it or get over it, it's just being sad.
But it isn't. And hooping has…

Today was a great day... the last weekday I had off before my new Monday-Friday school schedule hits with a vengeance! Woke up early (been workin on that) and did 8-minute hiphop dance exercise On Demand w/ Danielle... it got me laughing and awake and I was so energized throughout the day! We've been trying to do yoga or something in the morning, tried the ab yoga routine but it was waaaaaaaay too hard :P
Dee went to work and I went outside, blasted some Daft Punk and hooped in the…

I've been playing with vortex reversals for a long time now and over the weekend I started connecting them to vertical chest hooping. When I tossed in a vertical duck-in I learned from Ziggy
and ChemicalGal’s back-roll
, I moved into new, unexplored territory. I love the freedom of movement born of…

Becoming "a hooper" has changed my whole identity - or, rather, completed it.
Sure, I had a decent idea of who I was before the hoop - but it was a work in progress at best. Describing myself always consisted of those horribly bland adjectives that everyone uses - "smart, funny..." and of course under hobbies, the ubiquitous, "likes to read." Ugh.
Man! I wanted an exciting hobby. Windsurfing. Mountain Climbing. Cave Diving. But, those things took a LOT of time, money,…

This past week I've just been trying a variety of tricks and see what I'm able to do.
I've learned how to step through vertically, but I can only get in on one side smoothly.
I've learned how to chest hoop, but with my arms above my head.
I've learned how to shoulder hoop, but that only happens every so often.
I've learned how to hoop with one knee, but I tend to hop around and can't stay still, foot planted to the grounded.
I've learned how to do a vortex, but…

So I visualized having 5 students at my class and the next day - out of nowhere - I had them! It was totally amazing! I had sold one of my hoops at our local flea market at cost to one of the nannies, and I guess her employer tried it and loved it. So she brought a friend. Now I've suddenly got people contacting me everyday! I'm thinking about expanding to a central location and selling hoops at a couple of local shopping "fairs". Its exciting, now I'm just a little nervous about my ability to…

I am home from the Northeast Kingdom Music Festival. We had an absolutely amazing time! We arrived a day early because we were vending hoops. After a couple of hours setting up we were able to relax in our comfy chairs in an almost empty field. They were doing lighting work and soundchecks on the stage so there was music and we started hooping....the way a person can in a huge open field under the full moon with no one around to run into or hit accidentaly with an errant hoop. It was pure…

on knee hooping, that is. i have tried and tried...with jeans on, fleece pants, scarves tied around my kness...but i can only knee hoop for 5 seconds at the most. i'm not hooping on my actual knee, but slightly above it and it's still killing the outside of my legs. i can't seem to get the hoop to raise either. i've tried it with my lightest, biggest hoop and still nothing.

The sunlight streamed brighter that day,
The leaves shimmered green in a dazzling way,
As I spun my hoop in an arch through the air,
Till it dropped with a clattered against the leg of a chair.
The girl learned forward, preparing to stand,
Dangling the hoop, like a wand, in her hand,
Then passed it back. I read in her glance,
That in motion or still we both form the dance…

It amazed me...if you don't know, this girls only 6 years old.
I even got her autograph on a photo of her spinning 24 hoops at once.
It absolutely made my day, and when i got home, inspired me to hoop even more.

Have just got contra-current working but no tricks yet - BUT I can waist hoop the opposite way to my dominant current!
Otherwise I have loads of tricks but my challenge at present is chest hooping which I reckon…

I haven't been blogging much of anywhere lately. I have this blog, my main blog, and a Myspace blog I keep for times when I want to be a little more frivolous and private. But mostly I have been on Twitter. I blame Apple for it, since I got an iPhone two weeks ago I have been Jenny-on-the-spot, mobile blogging with TwitVid, TwitPic, and Tweetie. Which is a lot of fun, but not big on details, as it…

Hey there! Now, I've got three journals, so this one is going to be pretty specific. This journal is going to keep track of everything hoop or pole related. I say pole related too, because they're both favoured hobbies of mine, and they tend to be equally challenging, as far as I can tell. Think of this as my "fun workout" journal.
I've been pole dancing for about three years now, and thus far not gotten inversions at all (though I got a tip on them recently!) but I've found heightened…

Okay, so I really need to update this! Back in June, went to WildFire 'fire arts' camp - four days of fun with hoops, awesome people and camping. It was all around a great experience. I took classes in poi hooping, knee hooping, hoop tossing, traditional staff, and aerials. Every night there was a free spin with awesome dj's - I didn't try any fire hooping yet, but hopefully one day soon. I had fun on the sidelines with my LED though :)
Since then, I have been preparing to teach two…

It's kind of amazing how just a little over a week of not hooping can rust me up. Unfortunately I wasn't able to bring a travel hoop with me on the cruise, but I still had a fun time. Although, I did hoop once. My cruise was through Disney, and it was a amusement park/cruise combo. At Magic Kingdom before the 3:00 parade, they had workers out on the street with small hoops for children to play with before it started. I went over and grabbed the biggest hoop (which was still incredibly small)…

I've heard time and time again to pay attention to your arms when you hoop, and I thought I was.....but now that I really have started to pay attention it's opened me up to so much flow with my hoop. I finally feel like I'm actually DANCING in my hoop!!! My boyfriend was watching me and he said that it has added so much to my hooping. Now there is way more to focus on instead of just the hoop....it makes any imperfection in tricks nearly unrecognizable. I took a video the other night but I want…

Its day 3, I'm doing the 30 day raw challenge. Along with Safire and Oprah, I count Alissa Cohen as a leading light. Someone I want to follow. She pioneered raw vegan eating, at least for me. I first saw her on the Tyra Banks show, "Diet Wars". I never actually watch the Tyra Banks show but thanks to being a stay at home Mom in Singapore I was stuck with whatever programming was on and too exhausted to change the channel.
Fortunately the universe gave me exactly what I needed at that…

Got arms in chest hooping today. YAY. Breakbeat + DnB were required. I was dancing while chest hooping too.
I can chest hoop horizontally so far. Goal is to get to angled & vert chest hooping
Vert & Horizontal Breaks are very handy.
Started working behind my back too.
I'd really like to get the vert step through. I'm placing my hands wrong I think.

I'm sick so no hooping today. This is pretty crap, I have had a battle with an episode of scabies I caught from my brother, and my immune system took a bit of a knock I think, (for anyone who has never had it, you basically have to cover yourself in nerve agent to kill these bugs, poison is not good for you...) I didn't manage to kill them for months, and now they're gone but I am hyper sensitive to allergen now and it is hayfever season yay...so now I have an enlarged epiglottis, which is…

with hooping. I started a bit under a year ago, having never been able to hoop previously, picked it up same day and have barley put it down. I have been having quite a bit of trouble finding material to make hoops with, and figuring out how to go about making a fire hoop. I have been spinning poi/fire for a few years and that definitely helped with learning to hoop. I have spent entirely too much time reading through the 'Hoop Making' discussions this morning and all I can say is WOW!! You ladies (and gents) have made some amazing things! I am so inspired by all of you. All I want to do right now is run out to the craft/fabric store and spend the next week sitting on my living room floor trying to figure out how to make fur covered hoops, fabric covered hoops, decourage paper (I still don't even know what it is!) coverd hoops, fabric ribbon hoops..... my…

I made a first hooping video after 5 weeks of hoop fun! Wanted to see how I look in my hoop. I was pretty embarrassed in front of camera. Didn't feel relaxed at all. And when I saw myself I wasn't so happy :) But it's very good that I made a movie of me hooping so I can see what mistakes I made. I look down to much, hands are attached to the body, ... Many things to repair. I can not perform in circus yet :))))

What is your goal for 2009? (Doesn't have to be hooping related)
To provide compassionate and individualized care to all those that I am in contact with who are transitioning from this lifewalk to what comes next.

This is less of a goal and more of a mission statement. I do this…

I have been hooping for almost 3 weeks now. I have attended 4 beginners classes. I started off with a Saturday group and did three sessions with them. I had been progressing well and felt like I had made a bunch of progress already. I walked into my first class not able to hoop at all, and now I can hoop in inflow and out, do breaks, paddling, off body passing, floating up and down (only in…

Ok its 1.36 am but I must just jot down that phase one went reasonably well, tested in garden as shown in latest vid. It is extremely light due to the materials, and it wasn't properly fixed as I realised when I increased the speed lol! All in all though I think this shows promise. Cost so far has come to around £8, at the most. Not bad for an LED hoop. Will keep updates of progress.
