In the beginning. . .

So I thought perhaps I should start this journal thing to keep track of progress made. And then maybe folks can give suggestions and learn from my mistakes if nothing else. I've had my hoops for about a week now. I have a 39" and a 43" travel hoop, both from Hoopnotica. Love em both. The travel one creaks a little, with all the joints it kinda makes sense. But anyway, just got the bigger one day before yesterday. And I'd say Im doing pretty good. I got waist hooping and I can move around…

oh becoming a dancer

"if I could tell you what it meant, there would be no point in dancing it"

I have no idea who said this, but it's a quote that has meant so much to me. I've found that through hoop and belly dance that I'm being able to express myself in ways I haven't imagined. I used to get annoyed when people claimed they did something in order to express themselves, but now I think I understand so well what most people mean. through hoop dancing, I find that my self expression is not only trying to…

Class #1

Taping has now become easier. A few lessons learned, don't even attempt a deep angle with specialty tape at first. The narrower the gap between spirals, the easier it is to keep that tape even and cover the whole hoop. Another lesson learned, vinyl tape is really stretchy, don't pull it, let it do its thing.

My first class was held in the rain. I actually cancelled it, but decided to head down to the gym anyway with my hoops in case my 1 student hadn't gotten the message. Plus I was…

PRiDE HOOPiNG!

Today, I went to the Pride Fest in St. Louis in Tower Grove Park. I brought 2 of my hoops and met my 3 of my friends there. We each had a hoop and were right by the stage and just spread out and tons of people came up and gave hooping a try. It was great! We stayed for about 3 hours. I'm kinda surprised there wasn't more actual hoopers there, but it was a great time!

Spreading the hooping love.

First group practice

So I just started hoop dancing yesterday. I made my hoop and started learning from the online Seeding classes. Then today I went to Barton Springs to practice with the Cirkus Arts meetup group. It was very exciting, and I learned so much. I hooped for about an hour and 45 mins, and I was exhausted driving home. I think I will be very sore and bruised tomorrow, which is fine. I just hope that I don't hurt so much that I can't practice hooping tomorrow. :)

Another Euphoric experience!!!

I had another twilight moment hooping today :) It was a hot day but still had a nice breeze. I grabbed my hoops and went outside to play. I just made a REALLY big hoop and decided to test it out. OMG it was amazing! All the moves I have been trying to get down with my regular hoops just smoothly made their way into my free flow dancing. I put some Ani Difranco on and took my shoes off! I really wish I had my vid camera today but its ok because the moment (actually two hours lol) will be in my…

~as the fireflies danced~

the sky was tinged pink as the sun said farewell to the day while trees sillohetted the horizon welcoming the birth of the night's waxing moon. fireflies flickered their illuminescence creating their own dance as i spun circles in the damp grass. rain had fallen. thunderclouds brought more water to quench the thirst of earth's family. the air was moist. the clouds were thick. patches of blue made one last appearance as light transformed into dark. birds sang their goodnight songs and the…

The Charleston! hehe

I was dancing around to some old swing tunes today and I tried doing the charleston while hooping. For those of you who enjoyed the challenge of the grapevine, try this one! :-D

I also discovered that it was fun to do a Charlie Chapman impression while hooping! ehehe

Continuous vertical walk through

At least, I think that's what it's called. Boy it looks neat! It's easier to do with my big hoop, but it keeps hitting the ground. It looks really rough right now, but it's fun to do. Ever since I got the shoulder hooping down my transitions are so much smoother. I still loose it, but I can save the shoulder hooping by shimmying it back up and then spinning. Very fun...I haven't had so much fun "exercising" ever!

Hooping in Public!

Over in front of Macy's they've recently turned Broadway into a pedestrian promenade. Sheryl's organized something with the parks department (or whoever it is that controls that space) so that she can give free hooping lessons to folks. It's held on Thursdays from 6 to 7pm in front of Macy's if you're ever in that area and want to give it a shot. I met in person some folks I'd been talking to online for a bit which was really great! Got the shoulder hoooping!

I finally got it! I have way less bruises in this last attempt and can actually maintain movement! I really can't wait until my Hoopnotica DVDs arrive...and I so want to get into the Seeding series. I also finally made a Hoop Mix CD to dance to outside. It makes the time go by so fast, and I find myself hooping a lot longer with the music, so hat's off to my brother for all the music he cataloged and downloaded for his sisters to use!

I was so bored with my hooping. I had basics down, and was looking at trying to do more. I ordered the hoopnotica level 2 dvd

I fired it up and gave it a shot. I'd learned how to do the hand-off corkscrew a bit and I'd started chest hooping before today, but some of that other stuff that I was trying...hoo doggie! Laying down, foot hooping

I am a very active person, biking riding across town to work and run errands, three hours of swim instructions then 20 mins of laps. There are some days that I just don't want to stand up or use my legs anymore. I had knee injuries from volleyball in high school so my knees just plain have a limit.

Well last night I really wanted to play with the hoop so I laid down on the kitchen/dinning room floor and hooped with my arms. It was so fun and felt great! I could roll from one side to…

my first hoopdance - thoughts on videotaping oneself

Yesterday night I decided to videotape myself. Finally armed with a tripod, I hooked up my digital camera and set it to record video. My first experience looking at myself "performing" was hideous. My arms were doing things that I wasn't expecting, and some of the moves I thought were my "signature" were rushed, ugly, and just downright awful. I never felt worse about my hooping, suddenly thinking "people have actually WATCHED me do this?" I wanted to quit, but instead I took a few breaths and…

Eddie Vedder--wonderful man, musician.

I see A LOT of music. I travel many miles to see bands that I enjoy. Typically, they are stand up dance-party rock shows. My favorite, of course ; ) However, from time to time it's nice to experience something different..have a little balance in the style of concert I attend. Pearl Jam is a band I love, yet have never seen. They don't tour like bands I see repeatedly on the road, and if they do, possible shows I could see are limited. Wheeh! Just landed back home after a weekend of sun and spinning at the Mid-Missouri Summer Solstice Bliss Out. The camp ground was really primitive and the crowd smaller than expected, but there was a great family-vibe with lots of little ones prowling the grounds. Today

I made a flow toy from reclaimed and random materials around my house. It is a slender staff that has tubular crinoline (also known as Cyberlox) ribbons and a bit of faux fur on both ends. It functions as a giant "devil stick" if you use your fingers and arms/etc to balance and toss it. It has excellent wind resistance so slow and flowy staff dance as well as gentle contact moves are possible. It is kind of like painting on air if you will , or even trying to move an object underwater depending…

Hoop Dunce

When I went outside to hoop earlier this afternoon, I felt like such a dunce, as if I'd forgotten almost everything I'd learned about hooping above & beyond the basics. Ugh. Not a happy feeling.

I'm blaming it on the weather. Which doesn't bode well for the rest of the (Texas) summer: hot, hotter, MISERABLE! I guess I'll have to find a larger indoor space, or do some late night hooping to compensate. Hooping in my bedroom doesn't let me do much off the body tricks, due to the…

I was able to shimmy the hoop from my waist to neck every once in a while with out the tape, but now it's going up more naturally with less effort all the time. It's not perfect yet, but I'm on the right track now. I think the hardest part is the neck hooping. My shoulders keep getting in…

So I hoop when I get the chance. Lately though, I have been stuck doing homework most of the day. I just want this class to be over with, so I can have more time to unlock inner hooping excitment!

Just a Bit of Progress

I'm still waiting for my second Hoopnotica video to arrive. It's kinda killing me. I bought it with a new travel hoop, and I haven't gotten that either. I'm trying super hard to be patient. I know I ordered my travel hoop after a bunch of people. It's just hard because I REALLY want that video!

I went online last night and searched for hooping instructional videos. I practiced a bit of chest hooping this morning (seriously for like five minutes, no more...enough for me to be like,…

making progress . . .

. . . with my knee hooping. I can't keep it above my knee to long though. It ends up dropping to my shin where it stays and spins while banging up my lower leg. Ouch. I think the biggest problem is that my hoop is still naked, no tape yet. Or at least thats what my pro knee hooping boyfriend told me. lol. I tried ordering from identi-tape last night, but after picking out a billion colors (just in case) I realized they don't ship to p.o. boxes. :( boooo. So sometime next week I hope to hit up…

In the flow

Today was the first time in a long time that I really tried to live the flow. With school and life and this tiny little apartment sometimes it is just hard to really get into it. I got to really let go today. I didn't worry about when my hoop hit the ceiling or my walls and laughed everytime it hit the floor. I spun so much it made me dizzy and I walked away wanting more. What a feeling to have. The freedom of it all. I have missed it, missed the sense that I get when I am not obsessing about a…

Hoop City

I'm super excited to be a part of this hooping community. Down here where I live, the town is small, and well... so is the amount of info from the outside world. Not a lot of people know about hooping and so far I have met only one other person that has as much love for hooping as I do. I am looking forward to getting out there and meeting more hoopers!

Finally starting to hoop!

So I finally started hooping!! I first saw hooping in January when a friend e-mailed me Safire's Paramore video. I was blown away! I really wanted to try it but didn't really know where to learn how to hoop dance. Then a few months went by and I kinda forgot about it.

The other day I was in the dollar store and saw some hula hoops for sale and I remembered the video. I bought one but sucked really bad trying to hoop with it. So I came online to find out what I was doing wrong and…

Missing out

I've been missing hooping all week, my dreaded sinus infection is nearly over. I'm finding though that hooping alone is not enough of a workout, I need to get back to strength training and toning exercises fast - I'm trying to put it all together into one workout for my hoop group workouts.

For now, I'm looking forward to a morning hoopout on the clubhouse roof. Next week, my connectors and tape arrive from the US, and then its all about hoop making.

So I convinced my 2 best friends, Nel and Michele, to try hula hooping. Nel ordered a hoop for herself and I ordered one for Michele as a late birthday present. :) My hooping community is growing. lol.

Last night while they were over we watched Daft Punk's Interstella 555 while we took turns hooping. I worked on getting my hands in the hoop (comfortably) while hooping at the waist, shimmying it up to my neck (so close), and hooping at the knees. My boyfriend was instantly able…

I've had my Hoopnotica collapsible hoop for a couple of months now, and it's showing some wear. I didn't realize, once I first got it, that I shouldn't hoop on the tarred roof or the sidewalk. While I'm more conscious about where I hoop now, my first hoop is looking a little worse for wear.

Jealousy and Hooping

I feel terrible about it, but I want to confess. I'm jealous of other hoopers....

Everytime I go to hooping.org (which is practically every day) or hear about a hooper anywhere else I get jealous. Whenever I see another hooper doing what they love professionally, getting a book published, having a professional photo shoot, doing charity events, learn a new trick, have a style I don't have, can contort in ways I can't, sell hoops, can hoop full time, teach a hoop class, are thinner,…

Hoop-Love and Rain

Maybe it’s the humidity or the almost over-whelming swirl of possibility, but my brain is a chaos of new ideas and fragmented poetry. I’m torn between wanting rain (to clear my head) and sunshine (to record a video for the Hoop-Mama project). Yesterday was such a muddle. I woke up to find my May Practice Video on hooping.org, so I spent waaaaay too much time neurotically checking my e-mail. Summer time, when the living is easy

My first weekend at the Sedalia Area Farmer’s Market went well. Despite having a very minimal booth-set up and a small inventory, I made a little money selling both hemp and hoops. All the hoops I sold were small (25-ish inch) toddler hoops. I sell them with the explanation that:

“Most kids won’t start waist hooping till 4 or 5, but toddlers and pre-schoolers will love to toss and spin these small, colorful hoops alongside Mom or older siblings.”

However, parents seem to…

Last night I realized the best thing about getting used to the hoop on my body before tackling tricks. Every practice session is a hoop jam. No drilling tricks, just crank the music and dance my ass off.

I love love love love hand hooping over my head and dancing under the hoop. It makes me feel graceful.
