I've been trying to figure out how to edit the videos I record for several months now. I have windows movie maker, but there were several problems I encountered along the way. First; my digital camera records movies as a .mov file. Windows Movie(wmm) maker seems to only recognize .wmv files. I had to search and search for a free convertor program that was truly free and was easy to use. I finally found one yesterday. Second; Anytime I used any file that wasn't .wmv in wmm it would freeze up and I would have to end the program with crtl+alt+delete. So, next I had to find a program to convert my mp3s to a .wmv. Argh!!! I found one that had a decent free trial period. Here it is: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/.

Now I try to go back in to work on the project I saved. Unfortunately it didn't want to let me work on it. So I started the whole process over again and did not save my work until I was ready to save it as a movie. And all this took me months to figure out and quite a few hours yesterday. Hopefully if you are encountering the same problems this will help. And if you aren't editing videos yet, hopefully this will save you some frustration.
