Three months ago I fell and fractured my humerus. That wasn't the worst of it. As a complication of my injury, I had bruised my radial nerve, leaving me with a condition known as radial nerve palsy. My left hand was paralyzed. I was told that the damage might be irreversible or might take up to a year to gain function again. It was devastating. While some might lose hope, I found determination. I love hooping and was not going to let an injury take that from me. For two months, I diligently worked on raising my hand. I used a brace that allowed me to keep my hand stable and would just sit there and try and hand hoop for hours. It paid off. I was soon able to lift my wrist and fingers. I am writing this post with two hands! My doctors were in awe of how quickly I started to heal. I owe it all to my love of the hoop. Now, three months later, my hand is 90% functional again. Hooping has helped me retrain my muscles and nerves to do their job and has helped to strengthen my arm and hand. I have even learned the 3 beat weave, a trick that I found frustrating before my injury. I think I am a stronger person now than I was before. Hooping heals.
