Happy New Year to me!! I just signed up for both classes in the Budding Series and the Breaks & Reversals class. I am so beyond excited!
So, my hooping goal for 2011 is to slow down and concentrate on my ultra-focused style of practicing. I've been having great results with this practice method (see previous journal entry). I feel it's important for me to really perfect (to the extent possible - is anything truly ever perfect in hooping?) the moves in my repetoire. I have so many moves I know "half-assed" from my first 8 months of hooping when I tried to cram every possible thing into my head and body that I could with regard to hooping. It's time to really learn these moves, to explore them, to see what they can do and where they can take me. I love the focused practice. I find it soothing, mesmerizing, relaxing. It's very zen to work on one thing over and over and over again and then start to play with it and expand upon it. I highly recommend this form of practice.
But . . . one always needs something new, right? And some of the things on my "I kinda/sorta know this trick" list are included in Sandra's Budding Series classes . . . and I don't really know any breaks or reversals and ever since I saw a YouTube video of a girl doing some very beautiful, graceful, slower, more flowing breaks and reversals, I've realized that they do have a place in my hooping style and that I need to learn them . . . and, well, I just love Sandra's classes. They are so incredible, and I have so much fun learning with Sandra - not to mention badgering her in the classroom discussions with questions and progress reports. Sandra is so responsive and so helpful. It really is the next best thing to taking a class live with an instructor.
If you haven't tried any of Sandra's classes, I highly recommend them. Sure there are YouTube tutorials galore and many of them are very, very good, but there's just something about Sandra . . . plus, you get feedback!
I'm so excited for 2011 and getting these classes gave me something a little extra to be happy and hopeful about and looking forward to in the coming year!
Comment by Rose on January 5, 2011 at 5:44pm Yea, Suzanne! I'll be seeing you in the classroom. I love minis. They're hard, but so far they haven't frustrated me. Just remember going into them that they are indeed hard and give yourself some slack. I don't mean like a defeatist attitude like "these are too hard, and I'll never get them." More like, "yeah, these little babies are tricky, and I'm going to have to work slowly and carefully." Then you'll take the frustration as it comes. I feel so soothed when I play with my minis, and I'm taking it ultra slow. For the first two or three weeks, literally all I did was work on my planes and my timing. I didn't even attempt a weave or a turn at all. Now I've got some of the basic weaves down and the basic turning (turning with the hoops going in the opposite directions is a doozy, so I'm still working on that), and I'll be moving next to the 3-beat weave and the reel turns.
I'm glad you're having good luck with focusing on simple things. Isn't it kinda' fun just to really concentrate on one or two things. Even if they're simple moves, you can learn so much about making them great and about all the variations you can do with them. It's so weird, but the little ol' backwards weave has really changed my outlook on hooping. I'm amazed at how much I can do with a backwards weave.
Post lots in the classroom! I always feel like I'm the only student there, badgering Sandra! LOL!
Comment by Svea on April 19, 2011 at 1:15pm The Breaks & Reversals class is my favourite <3
I just sat down and wrote down all the hoop tricks I know to create new combinations and increase my flow. Taking it slow sounds good... I'm still having problems with flowing, maybe I just need some extra muscle memory ;)
