Hoop dance has for me, like most people who have achieved some sort of skill with it, enriched my life in ways I never thought it could. It makes me happy, it calms me down, and most importantly, it gives me something unique that I can be very proud of. I wan't necissarily insecure before, but there wasn't anything that I felt set me apart from the rest of my peers.
Now, two years later, I am obsessed with my hoop, and know that a lot of other people could be too if they'd just TRY! I work at the Cheesecake factory, a HUGE restaurant with a ton of employees. I've put my videos on my mp3 player and have been trying to show as many people as possible what this crazy thing is called hooping. At first people just laughed at me, "You hula hoop? lol"...No one even knew what it was. After a few people started seeing it, a few more wanted to see it, and so on.
At this point, I have a few girls who are ready to start learning! I am so excited. I think the biggest thing I am going to be able to teach them is to not be afraid to be goofy, or look dumb, or hit yourself in the head. It seems like, even aside from just hooping, people are too serious. Everyone is afraid to make an ass of themselves for the sake of some fun.
The most important thing hooping has done for me is make me more secure. I am happier, goofier, and definatly more free.
The other day my boyfriend and I had a new couple play poker with us. The girl Britney, got out and saw my hula hoops. After I showed her what I did with them, she immediately put my favorite hoop around her waist and started spinning it....for like a half hour. It was her first time, and she was completely blissed out. All I said was "That hoop is yours now"....I've made like forty hoops in my life. I only have six or so, and I've only sold two...I just give them away when I find someone who enjoys them. Hooping is the greatest gift you could give.
