Okay, so Thursday was the first day of my 8-week hoopdance/workout class through our adult-ed program. There were 27 brand new hoopers there and it was wild! We had an entire gym at the middle school to play in. It was a challenge because I had to keep running back and forth across the gym to help people learn tricks. But I was able to cover waist and hip hooping, vertical and horizontal arm hooping, kicking over the hoop as it goes around the body, bringing the hoop back on the body, bellydance style hooping (feet close with bellydance arms), and some flashier tricks like going from standing to kneeling while spinning the hoop overhead and 'warrior' to jump-through. Anyway, it was really fun and 19 people purchased hoops so they could practice at home, so I was happy about that! (Also carrying around 30 hoops for each class was a little tough lol). I am really looking forward to next week's class!

Today I entertained at a 10-year old girl's b-day party. I taught the kids several tricks and also we played a few hoop games. I also did a little performance, but I was so nervous at first that I dropped the hoop a few times - I guess my hands were sweaty (embarassing!)

Now I'm just looking forward to warmer weather so I can start planning free meetups locally :) There are at least 50 people interested in the area! I was so lonely last year when I started hooping, there was no one around to talk or hoop with and now it's so much better :)

That's great! How did you manage to get so many people involved/interested if nobody knew hooping before? I am at the same situation, lonely hooper, trying to spread the love but it is just so difficult, almost impossible. Any advise?

Hi Jana :) It helped that I am a fitness instructor/yoga teacher, because I started offering monthly workshops where I work and got some interest that way. Then, last fall, I contacted our Adult Education program and pitched the idea. They got back to me a few months later, I had a short interview with them and then they did all the advertising etc. If you can go through a city Adult Ed program (through the school system), they usually send out a book of courses available every semester to all the residents of that city or town - free advertising for you! All of the participants are from my town except for 2 or 3 people. I'm hoping to bring it the surrounding towns next :) If you want a hoop community, just go for it! Another tip I would give is to tell any hopeful instructors to get a group fitness certification through, www.AFAA.com or www.ACEfitness.org. It's not very expensive and it will open a lot of doors for you. Also, you will need CPR. Good luck!

oh and I started a hoop club on www.meetup.com. It's about $10 per month, but I have 34 members not including the people from my new class :)
