I have been hooping for only close to one month now and am already suffering from my first hooping injury. Yesterday the pain in my back was so bad I wasn't even able to get up, so I lay on the floor like a turtle on its back, unable to move for about 30 minutes. It's a bit better today, but the pain will take some more time to go away completely. I have to go to physical therapy twice a week for three weeks now. Luckily, it's only overused muscles, they said. So my untrained body simply wasn't ready for my extremely sudden, highly motivated hoop practice. Well, I should have known...

The bad thing (except from the actual pain of course) is that I won't be able to hoop for... I guess at least one full week which makes me so very sad. I really enjoy SaFire's online classes and I'm super motivated. Well, it'll probably take a little more time now. I'll have to take it more slowly from now on. Me, who is probably one of the most impatient persons in the entire world and who seems, for the very first time in her life, to have found a physical activity that she actually likes -- yay....

Oh wow that's crazy! Never heard of that happening before. Make sure you're hooping both ways equally if you're not already. I've been hooping to the left for far too long and messed up my back something awful lol

Sounds like you have a version of "hoopers hip''. Seems to me that your hooping only in one direction when you practice. Using both directions helps prevent cramps, muscle tightness and pulling a muscle. Think of your muscle as a  rubber band if you only twist it one direction it's going to twist up into a ball and not unwind. Moving it in the other direction unwinds that tension. Moving in only one direction will indeed overuse the muscle causing the problem you have. So to prevent this from happening again, and happening in other parts of you body, hoop in both directions (currents.) Also stretching before, during and after a hoop session will help prevent soreness, help you gain flexibility and help prevent other muscle problems.
I hope you recover nicely.

Thank you for your advice! My hips are fine, though. The pain is all around my left shoulder blade. I probably even know the direct reason for this: I did do some stretching before my hoop sessions but one time I think I overdid the shoulder stretching a little bit... And in the following days I mainly worked on lift ups from hip to hand hooping. That adds up to me...

And I've had problems with my back before. A couple of years ago a doctor told me that my upper spine is a little crooked, which wouldn't be a problem at all if I had more trained muscles in my back. So actually hooping should be perfect for me. But I went from zero physical exercise to 2-3 hours of hooping every other day and that might have been a little too much for my body...

Fortunately I'm not feeling that bad anymore. But there's this pretty hoop here in my apartment waiting for me... Ugh, it's so hard!!

^^^ I am in the same position as you, although I didn't realize it until now. Thanks for sharing!

That's strange to hear you hurt your back hooping. Hooping does something to the back and is recommended for decreasing back pain. I started hooping April 21st of this year. then got into a car accident May 25th and broke my pelvis. I've been hooping since about 3 weeks after my accident because I'm so addicted to hooping that NOTHING will keep me away! I slowly started by just sitting in my chair and practiced hand hooping. I'm 2 weeks away from being able to start walking again. I've been standing on one leg hooping for about a week now. Today I was actually out at a music fest and I was hooping with my teacher. I'm proof that an injury doesn't limit you from hooping :)

Where there's a will, there's a way! <3

Oh yes, that's so true! I can't stay away from my hoop either. I know I probably should but it's just impossible :) Hooping is way too much fun and I'm even learning new tricks although my movements are still a little limited.
