So, I'm about 2 weeks into this whole hooping thing and I absolutely love it! Frustrating at times when I can't master something but I guess patience is the key! As of 11/4/2009, I can do most of the basics besides shimmying up or getting the hoop to my chest without my hands. If anyone has ANY helpful tips for this, it would be SO greatly appreciated! I'm so glad I got into this!! :D

try doing the movement before adding the hoop in, and use an adult size hoop like a 40"(or bigger)

I received these tips from Amanda
Ok, so the shimmy. For this move you will need to know neck hooping. It also helps if you can do the move where you put your hands inside of the hoop while waist hooping. The hoop will be traveling around your waist in your inflow/natural direction. Look to your first side (I am right handed, so I look to my right) and you will begin to see openings everytime the hoop revolves around you. This is your opportunity to bring your first hand in. You bring in your first arm, immediately followed by your second, then start doing very large shoulder shrugs to bring the hoop up to your neck. When the hoop reaches your neck, quickly switch to neck hooping forward and backward. A lot of people get stuck because they open their arms too wide when they stick them inside the hoop. Keep your arms pressed up against your sides while doing the shoulder shrugs.
