Your big old cousin is laughing at you....I am working on the same exact things right now that you were trying to do two years ago. Getting that foot back in, for me, requires a little lift with my left foot...which in turn lead be to be able to pick up the (what I think is the "kick start") right off the bat.  Now, If I could only get my left foot bak in WITHOUT the little lift!!

I call that little lift "the Scoop" and yes, it's the basis for the Kick Start.  Try coming up onto your toe of the standing leg as you drop your other foot in - close and/or in front of the standing leg - with the toe pointed.
