So, four days ago I switched the focus of my practice back to more of a technique focus as opposed to a flow focus.  Instead of just turning on the music and letting things unfold as they will, I am working on particular tricks.  I'm hoping that indirectly this will help me with flow, which I found myself struggling with the past few weeks.

Instead of letting myself consciously pick moves to work on (we all know that usually means picking something we're relatively adept with in the first place and ignoring the ones that cause frustration, which, of course, are the ones that truly need to be worked on), I pick a card from my basket of hoop tricks.  The first one I picked four days ago, was the backwards weave.  Good choice.  I've always found the backwards weave awkward, and I tended to avoid doing it.  I spent a solid 15 minutes that first day doing nothing but backwards weaving, switching hands so as to keep things in balance.  When one arm got tired, I'd switch to the other.  At first my backwards weave was pretty sketchy, especially with my left hand, but after just those 15 minutes of focused practice, I noticed a vast improvement with both hands.

My plan is to pick a new card whenever I feel ready and work on that move, work on the other moves I've been focusing on and then work on stringing the moves together with the hope of coming up with new combinations and improving my flow.  With the Christmas holiday and all the attendant busy-ness that goes with it, I haven't had much of a chance to hoop.  However, I have been able to eke out 10-25 minutes here and there every day, and during all of those short sessions, I have focused on the backwards weave.

After four days, my backwards weave with both hands is so fluid and it feels so good.  (Interestingly, I seem to be smoothest with my left hand.  Go figure!)  I haven't just worked on the weave, but I've worked on improving my vertical hand hooping (keeping my planes nice and straight and the hoop swinging in a good rythym) and adding various elements to the backwards weave - moving around forwards and backwards and side-to-side, doing a side step/lunge type move, going down on one knee and both knees, experimenting with levels, alternating hands and doing some turns and switches, alternating it with a forwards weave, and adding leg movements.  It's amazing how versatile the move can be, and I have really grown to love and appreciate it.

Yesterday I picked a new card, which was "floating."  Floating is Hoopnotica's term for taking the hoop from an overhead halo and bringing it down around the body and back up without switching hands (like in a vortex) or placing it on the body and then lifting it back up with either the same or the opposite hand (like a corkscrew).  It looks so beautiful when Rayna demonstrates it on the Hoopnotica Level 1 video.  I've only been able to bring the hoop to around chest level with my right hand, and barely to my eyes with my left hand, but I'm working on it, and yesterday after just a few minutes of practice with it, I am already seeing improvement.  Floating can be hard to work on for long since it involves spinning, but I'm trying to increase my time.  Another benefit - working on my sustained spinning!  I also started working on ways to transition between floating and the backwards weave.  A tricky combo and one that I think I'll find interesting to work on.

I like this way to practice.  I don't feel scattered.  I don't end a session thinking that I just kind of floated around from thing to thing not really improving anything.  I feel like I accomplish something, and it can be very soothing to practice in silence and focusing on just one or two movements.  I highly recommend practicing this way!

Which one of SaFire's classes has the backwards weave?  I have been sick for most of the Christmas season and busy as well and have not been hooping regularly.  I am going back to the beginning and going back through the Seeding classes and doing everything in both currents.  I am also going to be purchasing a new class or two.  Do you recommend getting the Budding series before getting Breaks and Reversals and Mini's etc?  I do not feel as if I have achieved much flow as of yet but plan to spend 1-2 hrs/day on my practice and start videotaping myself as well.  I am also going to try your idea of putting the tricks on cards as I feel I need a more structured way of practice or I just keep doing the same tricks over and over.

Hi, Suzanne!  What a bummer to be sick over Christmas!  Hugs!

Sandra teaches the backwards weave in the minis class.  I also see it is on the class outline for Budding One.  I'm not in Budding One yet. I initially learned it with a regular hoop from a tutorial posted somewhere here at HC.

I haven't tried Breaks and Reversals yet, so I'm not sure if it would be worthwhile to go through the Budding classes first.  You might want to ask Sandra her opinion over at the classroom.  I've got both Seedings and the Minis Class.  In January (with my year-end bonus, yea!), I'm going to get both Budding classes and Breaks and Reversals.

I am so enjoying my practice of working on just a few moves at a time.  It feels so much more focused, and I end up a hoop session feeling like I've accomplished something.  There are so many moves I know "half-assed" (for lack of a better term), and I notice on videos that when I do them in flow, they just look bad.  People always talk about flow, but IMO, I think everything flows better when you have a good handle on the moves you're doing.  I plan to just continue on as I am, taking things very slowly. I'm going to buy the classes I mentioned in January, but I may not get to them for awhile.  We'll see where things take me.  I've also got minis to work on, so I can't exactly make a ton of progress when I have to divide up my precious hoop time between the regular hoop and the minis.  Let me know what classes you decide to get!  Have you been practicing with your sock poi??

Sounds like a great plan!  I have not done much of anything with my sock poi at all.  I tried checking out some tutorials (not many) on youtube but feel pretty awkward even swinging them around plus can't seem to find any good tutorials.  Do you have any suggestions on which ones to start with?  I have been concentrating on waist hooping only for the past 2 days and trying to build my stamina back up.  Being sick is such a drain on your stamina and I feel like I'm back at square one!  I have been doing Caroleeena's suggestion of hooping in my opposite current for the same song for 7 days straight.  Day 2 and I am ALREADY noticing an improvement!  We are actually out of town and will be for a while longer and I have access to more hoop space...though it is a catch 22 as there are more objects around that can be broken and damaged (and I don't own..or have the $$ to replace!) so the freedom is a mirage at best..lol!  I wish I could say we are somewhere warmer!  I hope you have a stellar New Year! : )

Suzanne, I like this Nathaniel's stuff on YouTube.  Here's the link to the 1st in his series of poi videos.  He has quite a few and they're numbered, so you can tell which order to go in -

I think he teaches well, and he's got a great accent!

Otherwise, you can't go wrong with Nick and the gang from PlayPoi.  They have a series of tutorials on their website - http://www.playpoi.com/poi-basics

Great job on the improvement. I'm amazed at how totally focusing on something for extended periods leads to so much improvement!  I continue to find ways to improve and expand upon the backwards weave! I'm also making gains with minis!  I've got the basic turn going backwards to the left pretty much down, and am really improving with going to the right.  Tonight I spent a lot of time working on the backwards chase weave, and I've almost got it!  It's so exhilirating!!
