it's actually not too slippery, and I think putting tape on it might mess with the flow.  I'm going to experiment more, but if anything I might put hockey tape on it because I prefer that grip over gaffer tape and it's lighter and thinner.

they're lightweight and thinner than I imagined (thinner than 1/2 in hoops).  I haven't had any bruises yet, but I also didn't hurt myself at all when dropping them.
