Hooping Community - Hoop City

This is the video I'm most well known for. The video has taken on a life of it's own and travelled all over the world. It was banned from YouTube in January 2009 due to a copyright complain by WMG. It will hopefully find a permanent home here where WMG cannot complain.

*Clipstar News* My video can no longer be in the contest since I don't have rights to the music. So, no story of "girl wins million dollars hula hooping." Man that would have made a sweet title for an article.

Reflection made on February 13th, 2010

"You know what the most amazing thing is. The final contest never happened and the million dollar prize was never awarded. It makes me shutter to think about what it might be like if the contest had gone through and I ended up winning a million dollars.

Imagine it for a second. This was BEFORE Hoop City. If I had won a million dollars on the first of January, TWO WEEKS before creating Hoop City........... who knows what would have happened? I would have used the money to go travelling and gotten distracted and likely never would have discovered a way to make Hoop City a reality. It makes me nauseous just thinking about it. Thank God I didn't win that money. There's no way it would have compared to this.

We are so blessed in life without seeing it. The universe has quite the sense of humour and uses a sick way of unfolding things in ways that make us feel defeated or that we've lost something when in reality our "loss" is really a catalyst to something greater."

Safire,

This was the video that inspired me the most. And still does. I watched it all the frickin time and I'm sure all my friends and coworkers were sick of me making them watch it with me. But I can't tell you how much you've inspired me.

I wish you had won, and gotten the liberation money can offer, but I would never have expected an online community - hoopcity - to give me so much! I have met up with wonderful hoopers in the area, we have exchanged information/inspiration and it's been ... I dont have words for it. It really is shaping my life. Hooping is not just the movement, but the community.

I'm sad you didn't win, mostly because I wish I had that type of financial stability to be as liberated - travel - etc... but you can do that, regardless. You not w

So, essentially, thank you for everything you've offered. I think you're amazing (duh).

Steph!

Great video Safire!
A few thoughts:
-I think you're right about the million dollars; sometimes it takes hardship to get to the top. Most millionaires or successful musicians & performers started from nothing and had to knock on a LOT of doors to get where they were, they weren't just handed opportunities. And this beautiful vibrant exploding community you've created might not be here, which will likely lead to more, even bigger opportunities for you.

-The dancing is awesome but I think the music really makes it explode. I found this first on Youtube with the spacey downtempo soundtrack, then I clicked here to see the original. HUGE difference! The vibe is completely changed! From slow, sensual syrup to LOUD BOISTEROUS LAVA! It's exciting, heart-pounding, and doesn't hurt at all to have a chart-topping rock single that went double platinum.

-While the song was a GREAT choice in terms of the overall vibe (you did win $10 grand!), in the long run it probably wasn't the best from a legal standpoint. You didn't get sued, but if you won that million bucks you might have. That would've been a nightmare, and I think that's another blessing that it didn't slip through. As our art form and the hoop community continue to grow at an exponential rate, we'll start seeing hoopdance vids with millions of hits instead of thousands, and big money involved. With big money comes big risk and more scrutiny on us to "play by the rules".

-Have you considered sending a copy of the vid to the band before submitting to contests? They seem fun. You never know, they might love it and put pressure on the label to let it slide! Stranger things have happened...

-I struggle with the music issue myself too, as do myriad hoopers, dancers, DJs, and other performers trying to make art. My first hoop vid was Video of the Day on hooping.org yesterday, due in part, I'm sure, to the cool music. But as much as I want it to get popular, I hope it doesn't get too popular because that could gain attention of the publisher or artists, who will have the music stripped. The musical artists have copyrights to protect their work, and at the same time I think artists, DJs and performers should also be free to "repurpose & remix" that work to create new amazing art. I don't think there's an easy answer. For now, hoop businesses like Hoopgirl & Hoopnotica have to hire their own musicians for their DVDs (the best they can afford, which is probably much cheaper than licensing & royalties on a hit song).

-Even though you get a few more hits to your video you might kinda want to leave "paramore", "misery business" or any mention of the track out of the tags. ;-) When it rockets to over a half million views using a hit song a major label, it's probably not so hard for Warner's intellectual property hounds to find when they're hunting for TOS violations. "Sort by: View Count"... bam, first page.

Can't wait to see your next video. Keep up the great work you do!

Awwwww... that is the cutest thing ever! Hoopalicious and Spiral are my hoop moms, they were the first ones I found online and still I'm trying to get my body to do what they do. So stunning.
