Fostering Hoop Communities

A space for those of you who would like to exchange ideas on how to build, strengthen or foster a hoop community in your area. Let's support one another in helping these types of communities flourish, and to extend our outreach beyond the hoop.

Welcome!

Hi Hoopers,

Since the group description limited what I could say, I wanted to explain a little more what I envision this group's purpose to be. I started this group because I am very interested in the idea of how to keep communities going strong. Recently I have been working on this exact task in my area, and wish that I had this type of resource to refer to when I started out.

With my increasing involvement in the Boston hoop community over the past year, I discovered that our community is very special, and wanted to contribute to its continuity and growth. The first thing I did to work towards my goal was to start organizing weekly meet ups in the park, which I offered to take the lead on for 2009.

At the time I was happy and excited to take on this task, but did not realize how many factors there are to consider when trying to attain "critical mass" for such events.

So here we are! I hope that we can use our collective knowledge to help others get a hoop jam started in their area, get others involved in hooping, suggest ideas for community activities, and lastly, leverage our members to create a positive impact that extends beyond our favorite circle.

Happy hooping!
Rachel

Any advice on getting the spin jams moved in doors? If you've found a solution to this problem involving no money I'm all ears. Not to sound cheap or anything, but I'm a smoothie blender, so I'm not working with a whole lot, and neither are the people in our group from what tiny little bit I know of some of them.

I posted this earlier if you want to read the whole thing I put out there on this subject:

So I dont know it all, by any means- but I run a hoop group in ST. Louis (STL Hoop Club) that has grown to be quite strong. We have a hoop studio- that offers indoor and outdoor hooping for as many as can come. We have been an established club open to the public for over a year and things are just getting better. We have formed a performance team- and hold regular hoop related events and workshops. We will celebrate World Hoop Day this year with the sponsorship from a large non-profit The Botanical Gardens. Our schedule is so busy, we have to turn down events. If I can be a help to anyone getting started, please give me a shout :) I love that we all have something so personal in common. It is magical.

Swizzy Ape

a way out of the hoop

Posted by Swizzy Ape 2 Comments

I'm stuck in a loop with the hula hoop. When I was a little girl I was abused in every which way. Often I was grounded to my bedroom, with two bathroom visits and a dinner release. In my bedroom held my boom box. Loud music would draw my angry step father towards my room. But I had to dance, so from a young age I would take a few preventable beatings so I could dance in my bedroom. Pretending I'm dancing on stage with Brain Setzer, I had trained myself to ingore reality while I dance. Even…

I haven't posted for a very long time, but I have something worth sharing.  In the last couple of years, I have advanced enough to start teaching and I absolutley love my classes.  All my students are wonderful its the most favorite part of my week. Through a very unfortunate series of events, every hoop I own, including my hoops for students, were taken and no longer in my possession. I was so upset ,not for myself, but my students would have nothing to take class with. There…
